Term 4 Week 11

🌟 Primary 3/4 Weekly Round-Up – Term 4, Week Eleven

We have had another busy and exciting week packed full of learning, creativity and teamwork!

✏️ Literacy

This week, we completed our final spelling activities of the year. The children explored their spelling words in a variety of creative ways, including writing with chalk, painting, drawing and using different practical activities to help reinforce their learning.

On Monday, we enjoyed a special Rock, Paper, Scissors Day inspired by the story The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors. We began by reading the story together before creating our own Fair Play Charter, discussing what it means to be respectful, inclusive and a good sport when taking part in games and competitions.

We then held a class debate, discussing whether it is better to win all the time or to find challenge and learn from mistakes. The children shared thoughtful opinions and listened respectfully to one another’s ideas.

In the afternoon, the children became inventors, creating their own new Rock, Paper, Scissors characters. They thought carefully about the strengths and weaknesses of their creations, deciding who they could beat and who could beat them. This led to interesting discussions about fairness and balance in games.

🔢 Maths

Rock, Paper, Scissors Day also provided a fantastic opportunity for some practical maths learning.

The children played a series of Rock, Paper, Scissors games and made predictions about who might win. We discussed the language of probability, using terms such as impossible, unlikely, possible, likely and certain.

The children collected their results using tally charts before turning their data into bar graphs, helping them develop their data handling skills.

Later in the week, we completed our work on area, exploring how different shapes can have the same area despite looking very different. We also linked our learning to the World Cup by investigating the area of football pitches.

The children also completed some Sumdog assessments, giving them an opportunity to demonstrate the progress they have made throughout the year.

🌎 World Cup Learning

We have continued our daily World Cup starters, which have become a real favourite in class.

Each morning, we have listened to a story from a different country around the world before learning about its culture, capital city and interesting facts. We have located countries on our world map and continued tracking World Cup results as the tournament progresses.

The children also created some fantastic World Cup artwork, designing Highland cows dressed in football kits. Some chose Scotland, while others selected one of the countries they have been following during the tournament.

🌍 Topic – Building a Business

This week was an incredibly busy and exciting one for our café enterprise project as preparations came to life.

The children spent time:

  • Baking and preparing café treats
  • Making sandwiches and waffles
  • Organising resources
  • Practising their café roles
  • Developing customer service skills
  • Learning how to work as part of a team

We discussed how to welcome customers, take orders politely and work together to ensure the café ran smoothly.

We were absolutely delighted with the success of our café and would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along to support us. The children were incredibly proud of their hard work and loved having the opportunity to put all of their learning into practice.

This project has developed a huge range of skills including communication, teamwork, organisation, problem-solving, creativity and confidence.

🏃 Health & Wellbeing

This week, we also enjoyed our annual Sports Day. The children showed fantastic enthusiasm, determination and sportsmanship throughout the event.

They encouraged one another, celebrated successes and demonstrated many of the qualities we have spoken about throughout the year, including resilience, teamwork and respect.

🎭 Wider Learning

This week, we enjoyed watching a special concert performed by the older classes, showcasing the music and performances they had been working on as part of the recent music festival.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the performance and loved seeing the confidence, talent and hard work on display. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate music and creativity across the school and to support the older pupils as they shared their achievements.

It has been another busy and exciting week, filled with debating, problem-solving, enterprise, creativity and teamwork. With our café successfully launched and the World Cup excitement continuing, we are looking forward to one more week of learning and fun before the summer holidays begin!

Term 4 Week 10

🌟 Primary 3/4 Weekly Round-Up – Term 4, Week Ten

✏️ Literacy

This week, our spelling focus was the ‘aw’ sound. In grammar, we learned about commas in a list. To make our learning memorable, we designed some very unusual pizzas! The children created lists of ingredients for both their favourite pizzas and some truly disgusting combinations, practising how to separate items correctly using commas and and.

This week also marked the final chapter of our Magical Door journey. We entered Promise World, linking our learning to Global Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

The children wrote conversations between themselves and the Keeper of the Door, who explained why the Magical Door must now leave. In response, the children reflected on everything they had learned from the different worlds they had visited throughout the year and considered how these lessons might help them in the future.

To conclude our journey, each child wrote a Planet Protector Promise, explaining what they have learned through our Global Goals work and what actions they will take to help protect our world.

🔢 Maths

This week, we continued developing our understanding of time and explored how numbers change when dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000.

We also continued our work on area, helping the children build confidence in measuring and calculating the space inside shapes.

One of the highlights of the week was our Maths Whodunit Challenge. The children became maths detectives, using their skills and reasoning to solve a series of mysteries, including The Missing Pencil, and The Missing Chocolates. This was a fantastic way to apply maths in a fun and engaging context.  Would you believe that they discovered it was Mrs Teale who had stolen the chocolate!!

We also completed some maths assessments, giving the children an opportunity to demonstrate the progress they have made this term.

🌍 Topic – Building a Business

Our café enterprise project continued this week as we worked alongside Primary 1/2 to create decorations and displays for our café.

We also explored the importance of risk assessments, discussing potential hazards and how businesses can identify and reduce risks to keep both staff and customers safe. This helped the children understand another important aspect of running a successful business.

💻 ICT and Global Learning

As part of our World Cup learning, the children selected one of their countries from our classroom sweepstake and carried out their own research.

Using their digital research skills, they investigated:

  • Flags
  • Population
  • Languages
  • Culture and traditions
  • Interesting facts about their country

This provided a valuable opportunity to develop research skills while broadening our understanding of countries and cultures around the world.

🌎 World Cup Learning

We have continued to enjoy our daily World Cup activities, reading stories from different countries, learning about capitals and cultures, locating countries on our world map, and tracking tournament results on our classroom wall chart.

The children have shown great enthusiasm for learning about the wider world and making connections between geography, culture and current events.

🌟 Wider Learning

On Friday, we enjoyed Move Up Day, giving the children the opportunity to meet their new teachers and spend time in their new classrooms.

This was an exciting experience and helped everyone begin preparing for the transition into the next school year.

As we reach the end of our Magical Door journey, it has been wonderful to reflect on everything the children have learned this year. From Vikings to cafés, oceans to future worlds, and Global Goals to enterprise projects, the children have shown creativity, curiosity and enthusiasm every step of the way.

Term 4 Week 8

🌟 Primary 3/4 Weekly Round-Up – Term 4, Week Eight

✏️ Literacy

This week, our spelling focus was the ‘ou’ sound, and in grammar we explored contractions. The children enjoyed working with partners to identify and create contractions before building their own contraction bricks using Lego and word cards. This practical approach helped reinforce how two words can be combined to make a contraction.

Our Magical Door adventure continued as we travelled to Future World, linking to Global Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. The children imagined meeting Aila, a child from the future, and wrote conversations between Aila and a planet protector, discussing energy challenges and possible solutions. This gave the children a chance to apply both their speech mark and contraction skills in meaningful writing.

To complement this learning, we created shoebox worlds. Using small wooden doors, the children designed and decorated magical entrances before creating a world inside their shoebox. Some chose worlds we had already discovered through the magical door, while others invented entirely new worlds of their own.

🔢 Maths

This week our maths learning took the form of a Dragon Academy, with a different challenge each day!

On Monday, the children became Dragon Potion Masters, learning about volume and capacity by carefully measuring ingredients to create a range of dragon potions. After successfully completing five potions, they earned their very own Potion Master Certificate. There was great excitement as we mixed colourful potions while learning to measure accurately.

Tuesday’s Dragon Academy focused on measure. The children explored grams, kilograms, length and size through a variety of dragon-themed activities. They created dragon eggs from Play-Doh to specific measurements, measured dragon tails, and worked out the sizes of objects needed for a dragon habitat.

On Wednesday, we introduced division through an edible maths lesson. The children practised sharing sweets equally into groups and quickly discovered that division can be both fun and tasty!

On Friday, we combined maths with teacher-led PE during our Frog Olympics. Using clicker frogs, we investigated distance and measurement by comparing how far the frogs could jump and then measuring whether we could jump further ourselves.

🌍 Topic – Building a Business

This week, we worked alongside Primary 1/2 as part of our café enterprise project. The children took part in café interviews, discussing the different roles available and helping allocate jobs across the various café teams.

This was a fantastic opportunity to practise communication, teamwork, confidence and decision-making skills while continuing to develop our understanding of how a business operates. The children showed great maturity when discussing which roles would best suit their skills and interests.

🌱 Wider Learning

This week also marked our final visit to the polytunnel, with the last group enjoying the opportunity to help with planting and visit the animals. The children have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in these sessions over the past few weeks and have learned a great deal about growing plants and caring for living things.

It has been another busy and creative week, filled with dragons, future worlds, enterprise activities and plenty of practical learning!
