Our busy term

Term 1 has been a very busy term for us here in Cullivoe. We have learnt a lot and achieved a lot too. Here is what we have to say about our learning and our term!

Numeracy

Primary 2 – we have been learning our 2x table and what greater than and less than means and looks like. It was easy!

Primary 3 – We have been learning our 3x table and have worked hard in numeracy. We liked learning about place value.

Primary 4 – we have been learning the 8x table!

Primary 5 -we have been learning the 8 and 9x table. We have been playing beat my score which is really fun!

Literacy

We have all been learning about newspaper reports and the features of these. We have enjoyed learning about this and writing our own articles! We know that a newspaper needs a name, headlines, it has to be interesting, it is written in paragraphs, they have adverts in them, they are written in the 3rd person. We could give you more but that’s enough for now.

P5-7 have also been learning about superlative and comparative adjectives and looking at dictionary skills as well as recapping punctuation and developing comprehension and reading with expression.

Health and Wellbeing

We have been learning about the body and the organs. Here are a few that we have looked at: lungs, small and large intestine, pancreas, heart, liver, kidneys, stomach, bladder, gall bladder, oesophagus, rectum and the brain.

We have done an experiment which looked at the digestive system. It was really fun but also disgusting!

We had a couple of visitors in to talk to us about our topic. The health improvement practitioner talked to us about how to keep our body healthy. We had a scientist come in to talk to us about her work and different diseases/how to keep ourselves healthy.

The younger ones have been looking at throwing and catching in PE whilst the older ones have been learning about netball.

Other things within the school

Primary 4 have really enjoyed learning the recorder and have picked it up well.

We had our termly concert on Tuesday which was really good. The recorder players, both primary 4 and 5, all nailed their tunes which was fantastic!

The JRSOs have had a visit from a police officer to show them how to use a speed gun.

The pupil council have organised a coffee morning to support the charity Macmillan cancer support.

P4-7 have been learning about the global goals in eco this term. We have been picking topics to look at; life below water.

We have been learning to have a conversation in French and the older children have been looking at food.

Our feel good song we learnt this term was ‘Always look on the bright side of life.’

We focussed on article 24 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child which is: You have the right to the best possible health.

We took part in a STEM challenge to make a bridge for the three billy goats. We were in groups and had to design and make a bridge that would hold the 3 billy goats and the troll! It was really fun and we worked really well as a team. The bridges were all successful and held a lot of weight!

Out with school

We took part in the Harvest service and performed our Harvest Samba.

We had a lot of prize winners at the Yell Show AND Cullivoe Primary School have been awarded a trophy for the most prize winning entries!!

A few of the children have made the achievement wall this term due to passing their deep end test, winning medalsat various things. So a big well done!

 

Only 2 more days of school everyone! We are excited for the holidays and for Halloween.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Speed Gun

Today Elaine Skinnley and a police officer called Rachel came up to talk to the JRSO’s. They talked to everyone first and explained what their jobs were before Rachel let us have a go at wearing her uniform. She put Miss Nicholson and Thorfinn in handcuffs!

They then took the new and old JRSOs outside to show them how to use a speed gun and let them have shot. Julie drove back and forth so they could all have a shot…people must have wondered what she was doing!

 

Mysterious item found on beach.

When we were cleaning up the Breckon beach there was something that was washing up on the shoreline. Mrs Lawson only had walking boots on so Miss Nicholson, who had her rubber boots on, went to fetch it for us so that no one got their feet wet. This is what we found…

We didn’t know what this was but we knew it was something growing on a buoy. Miss Nicholson took a photo of it and asked her ‘fishing’ friends to see if anyone could help us identify what this was before throwing it back in the sea as it wasn’t rubbish but something living so it was only fair to return it. Do you know what this is?

It turns out it is goose barnacles! Another name for them is stalked barnacles or gooseneck barnacles but their scientific name is Pedunculata. They are a filter-feeding crustacean that live attached to hard surfaces of rocks or on flotsam that have become dislodged from the sea bed and washed up on shore. They are usually found in quite deep water and live up to about 3 years! Apparently they are the unquestionable secret gem of Spanish seafood!

Cleaning up Breckon Beach

Yesterday we went to Breckon beach to clean up any rubbish lying around the beach. We walked there and then were given bags and the older children were paired up with the younger pupils and then set off to different parts of the beach so that we were spread out. We had 10 bags and although not all of them were full that was the most rubbish we had found in a couple of years. We all worked really well together and did a good job of cleaning up the beach. Andy Gear was there looking for dead birds as every month he does a survey for the RSPB so we spoke to him for a little while. There was a huge pipe that was just too big to carry so we had to leave that and will talk to some strong men to collect it. When we were about to leave a seal popped up to see us. We think he was come to say thank you for cleaning up his beach.

 

Germ Science – How Clean Are Your Hands?

On Tuesday we were learning the importance of hand washing and how to describe that germs may be present even if they are not seen.

Whatever we do, we come into contact with germs. It’s easy for a germ on your hand to end up in your mouth.Washing your hands is the best way to stop germs from spreading.

We think some of the best times to wash your hands are:

  • When your hands are dirty.
  • Before eating or touching food you are helping cook.
  • After using the bathroom.
  • After blowing your nose or coughing.
  • After touching pets or other animals.
  • After playing outside.
  • Before and after visiting a sick relative or friend.

We undertook an experiment to show the importance of why we should wash our hands. Here is the steps for this experiment:

  • 1. Put a drop of lotion on your hands and rub them together to spread the lotion out evenly.
  • 2. With your hands over newspaper, ask your partner to put a pinch of glitter in the palm of one of your hands.
  • 3. With your hands still over the newspaper, make a fist with the hand that has glitter on it, then spread your fingers out. (We had to say what we saw)
  • 4. Now press the palms of your hands together and pull them apart. (We then had to look at our hands and notice what happened)
  • 5. Touch your partner’s hand. (We noticed that the glitter moved onto our partners hands)
  • 6. Get a paper towel and use it to wipe your hands clean of all the glitter. (the paper towel only took some of the glitter off but it didn’t take it all off)
  • 7. After using the paper towel, try using soap and water to wash your hands. (After thoroughly washing our hands the glitter did come off – some of us had to go back and wash our hands again as we noticed one or two bits of glitter in between our fingers)

The glitter was acting the same way that the germs on our hands act. There are a lot of germs, they spread around easily, and it can be hard to get them off. The difference between the glitter and germs is that germs are so small you can’t see them without a microscope. You have to know when you may have come into contact with germs and then wash your hands.

If we accidently touched our mouth, nose, or eyes while doing this experiment, we may have found glitter getting left behind. Germs travel the same way and can easily enter our body if we touch our face with dirty hands and germs can make us sick. That’s why it’s important to wash our hands before we eat. It is also important to wash our hands after touching something that might have germs, such as when we use the bathroom or play outside. If we don’t, the germs can easily spread to more places and to other people and cause sickness.

Second year to get a first for our cake!

This year we wanted to make an even bigger and better cake  for the Yell Show! We decided to make the show field – yes we were ambitious…but it paid off because we got first prize for our outstanding cake!!

It took a whole week to prepare and a very busy day on Friday for us all to put all the cake together. I think you will agree that all our hard work had was worth it though.

We had lots of ideas of what we could do. We really thought about the little details like bunting, the bouncy castle, the barrels, etc. We came up with some really ceative ideas as to how to make each part of the cake. We decided the hall, 3 sheds and Hendersons ‘fish and chip’ truck would be made out of cake. Ice cream wafers would be the slates/sheets for the roofs. The cars would be moulded from marshmallow Krispies, the bouncy castle would be made of flumps, the animals with regal icing, the barrels out of marshmallows dipped in blue food colouring, pens out of either curly wurlys, chocolate fingers, matchmakers or KitKat fingers – the different pens for different animals would be different and bunting made with skewers, string and small triangles cut out of coloured paper.

We had to follow a recipe to bake the cakes. We used a big tray for the hall (which we would be cut in half and put on top of each other) the sheds we decided to use a loaf tins as this would be a good shape.

We had to make a plan of the show field so we knew where we wanted to put everything and what size we would need everything to be.

We made the cows, dogs and ponies out of regal icing and then used icing pens to put colour onto them. We thought the primary ones could make the sheep out of cakes, and mini marshmallows.

We made Marshmallow Krispies and moulded them into the shape of cars, the ice cream van and a tractor and then decorate them.

We crushed chocolate biscuits to make gravel for the car park. We also crushed Oreos to make earth for the pens.

Primary 7 made the bouncy castle out of flumps.

Once we assembled the cakes we had to ice them. We spread jam on the cake to help the icing stick and then we made the roofs. We made  butter icing so we could get the waffers to stay on the roof.

We spread jam on the bottom of the cake so that the gravel would stick and not all fall off when transporting the cake. We also rolled out green icing so that we could make this grass for the horses pen.

We used the rest of the butter icing to spread over the remaining cake so that we could cover this in the crushed oreos for the earth.

Then it was time to put the blue barrels on and tie string around it to look like the rope.

Our cake was then finished!

We really enjoyed making this cake!

 

Junior Road Safety Officers

Our new primary 6 pupils have taken on the role of Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO)

Today our JRSO’s took primary 1-4 for a walk to discuss road safety.  We split them into 3 groups so that 2 JRSOs could go with them and we spoke to them about what was going to happen and what they needed to do before getting their jackets and high viz vests on.

After this they learnt a song:

‘Stop, look, listen and think before you cross the street. Use your ears and use your eyes before you use your feet. Stop, look, listen and think before you cross the road. Use your eyes and use your ears and use your green cross code.’

And then they were presented with a certificate!

 

Welcome Back!

A huge welcome back to everyone today. It has been lovely to hear everyone’s news from the summer and to see how much they have all grown! Dean is very nearly the same height as Miss Jamieson!!

We have had a very busy day creating our class charter. First we went over our rights and why we have them before splitting into groups and reading through the 42 articles and highlighting all the ones we think were appropriate for school. We then fed back to the class before returning into our groups to select what we thought were the 4 most important articles for our class charter. We had 24 to choose from so we held a vote to narrow this down. There was some great discussion and some arguments for and against why we should or shouldn’t have them. We ended up with 5 articles for our class charter as we thought they were all important.

Our next step was to design our class charter! We all had the chance to design our own class charter before taking a vote on which one we thought would like to make. Everyone thought really hard about how they could add the article, right and responsibility into their design. I think you will agree there were some fantastic designs to choose from.

We all had 3 pom poms which we then placed on our ‘top’ 3 choices. Everyone got to vote, even the staff! The winning design was Jasmine’s island.

After dinner primary 7 decided on what needed to be done and split us all into groups so that we all had a job to do. We had one group measuring the wall to see how big the charter had to be, decide on what the responsibilities were, people making the sand, the tree trunks, the palm trees, the sun, the buckets, the heading, etc. It was a very busy and productive afternoon! We all worked really well and helped each other. We are very close to finishing so hopefully by tomorrow we can share a photo of the finished display!

 

 

Bonfire Night

We had our bonfire on the 5th of November which was actually on Bonfire night. We have this up at Mursetter.

We went around Cullivoe on the 22nd of October to collect the wood for the bonfire. We had a full truck of wood and pallets which was great and made this the biggest bonfire we have ever had.  We had a Guy Fawkes to put on top of our bonfire however the secondary pupils make it and they came with it too late so we had to throw it on the side instead. Guy Fawkes was a man who tried to blow up Parliament.

After the bonfire was lit there was a firework display which was great. We loved seeing all the different rockets, some were really loud. We also got sparklers to hold too.

After the bonfire we went to the Cullivoe hall to have a supper. We had hot dogs, burgers, beans and chips. It was delicious!! We had a selection of sauces to go on top. After we had our lovely supper we played games.

Bonfire/Firework Safety

We looked at bonfire/firework safety during literacy earlier on in the week. We discussed what you should and shouldn’t do during bonfire night/firework displays and then created posters to show this.

Did you know that:

  • Over 500 children under 16 are rushed to A&E in the 4 weeks around bonfire night.
  • A rocket can reach speeds of 150mph.
  • Sparklers can reach a temperature of up to 2,000 degrees Celsius. That’s 20 times the boiling point of water!
  • 3 sparklers burning together can generate the same heat as a blowtorch!

So here are some basic firework/sparkler safety tips:

  • Make sure children stand a safe distance from the bonfire.
  • Keep everyone well back from the firework display.
  • Never go near a firework that is lit.
  • Never throw fireworks.
  • Never re-lite a firework if it hasn’t gone off
  • Always follow the instructions when using fireworks.
  • Always hold sparklers at arm’s length and wear gloves when holding them.
  • Don’t hold a baby or young children while you’re holding a sparkler – they could reach out and grab at them.
  • Don’t give sparklers to children under 5 years old. They’re too young to hold them safely and don’t understand why they might be dangerous.
  • Make sure you don’t wave sparklers near anyone else or run while holding them.
  • Once sparklers are out, make sure you put them in a bucket of water.
