Burravoe School can stay open :)

Today we had really good news because the Scottish Ministers decided that we can continue as a school even though we have been threatened by closure for a long time now. We have had lots of messages of support from people from all over the world and we would like to thank them very much!

Skye Performance

On Tuesday we went to Portree High School to show everyone our Crofting Connections video. We got our seats and sat for a peerie while then the first people came on and they sung a song in Gaelic. A lot more Gaelic singers and  instrument players came on then there was a poem. Then came Orkney and they read some poems, sung some songs  and played the fiddle. Pupils from Shetland came on and first came Brae High School. They played Dreamers Waltz, Aly’s Waltz, Jack Broke the Prison Door, Donald Blue and Sleep Sound in the Morning. Nigh Noness and Ship Wreck  were read by Peter. Why we Love Shetland was a presentation by Urafirth Primary School. Eence Apon a Time was a poem by Whalsay JHS. Baltasound JHS sang Whaur da Green Girse Grows. We played our video about our cereals that we made on the ipad and it was on the biggest screen you could imagine. :). Cullivoe had a poster about making kishies and they talked about it. All of the Shetland schools sung Farewell to Yell but the projector was in my eyes. At the very end, musicians from The Uists and Shetland played a song and it was really good and quite fast.

I really enjoyed eating dinner at Portree High School with the Uist and Shetland musicians jamming behind me and the whole performance itself was so fun because the music was really good.

Journey to Skye

We went to school on Monday morning, got in Miss Breyley’s car and drove on the ferry which takes 20 minutes to cross from Ulsta to Toft and then we went upstairs on the ferry. Once the ferry trip was over we drove through Bigton to Sumburgh Airport where we went through security and got asked lots of questions about our luggage and our ID. We waited on multi coloured chairs until the Flybe aeroplane arrived, once it had arrived and the doors were open we had to show a member of staff our ID and she ripped our tickets and gave us the small half to show to the lady on the aeroplane. Once we were on the aeroplane it started to move down the runway, we went faster and faster and then we started to take off .The trip from Sumburgh to Orkney was about 20 minutes long and very calm. When we had landed in Orkney we stayed in the plane while some people got on and off. We took off again because we had to fly to Inverness but this time it was VERRY bumpy! and it took us 30 minutes to get to Inverness. We arrived at Inverness Airport, got our suitcases off the conveyor belt and then got on the coach which drove us to Skye When we arrived in Skye we drove to the wrong hostel so we had to go back the way we came and then go down another road. When we got to the right hostel we had our supper after practising a song called Farewell to Yell, we went straight to bed after supper but we did chat for a while before we got to sleep.

Drawing Workshop, Skye

When we were in Skye we went to the Gaelic College to an Art Workshop.

http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/index_en.html.

We did it outside since we were going to draw the Skye landscape. There were about twenty people in our group. Julie telt us what we had to do. We drew a sketch first. We drew what was in the foreground really big to show it was closer to you.  In mine, the tree was really big and so was the wall that a light was on. We also had to put in shades to show what was dark and light. In the background I drew the mountains and the sea. It was a kinda bad day when we drew them so the sky was grayish coloured.

We got piece (Carrot sticks and a flapjack)!

When we finished our sketch we drew using charcoal. It was really thick and really light. We learned different techniques to use our charcoal. One was to turn it on it side so you got a rougher looking texture. I think my picture came out really good and I am really proud of it.

The Skye landscape was really pretty and i want to go there again some day!

Making Queencakes

Abby says she enjoyed making queencakes for the MacMillan Coffee Morning . We had to mix up sugar, margarine, eggs and flour altogether with a wooden spoon. Then we had to put it in the oven and we had to keep looking at the clock to make sure they didn’t burn.  We waited until they cooled down to ice them. I enjoyed the coffee morning.
