We had to walk down the road and we didn’t go to the beach we went straight ahead we went on a cattle grid and it the first pole was wobbly and the rest was not wobbly. We went really far and then we went back to the marina and  then we went the short way and we found lots of pretty stones and shells and then it was starting to rain and we saw some shelter and then it was time to go back to school and when we went back to school it was cold and wet.

Food For Thought Project

Introduction

We are doing a project called Food For Thought; For the Food For Thought we are doing about fish since we live on a island. We are doing our project with Cullivoe Primary School (which is on the south side of Yell!) We have started the project at the start of term.

We created a website on glow. We created the website because we share links, pictures, videos and documents we have either created or found with the pupil at Cullivoe School. We will also be going on trip over to C and A Thomason (which is  a mussel farm), we are also going on a trip to see the Norholm which two of the pupils parents own. The Norholm is a well boat, the Norholm moves fish into different cages.

What we have been doing?

In Art we have been making salt dough sea animals, there is seahorses, eels, fishes, jelly fish, ragworms, seals, stingrays. First of all we started using play dough to get used to shaping dough into sea animals. We couldn’t take the play dough apart and then added it again so we had to use our pushing and pulling techniques. We had about an hour to do that, we made starfish, dolphins, stingrays and seals. We had great fun! The day after P1 and P2 made the salt dough, and then we all got to use the salt dough to make our sea animals; it was very sticky but great fun, we painted the salt dough animals with acrylic paint, acrylic paint can stain your clothes so we had to be care full.

P3 to P7 have fun shaping play dough to make sea animals!

P1 and P2 having great time playing with play dough

Culinary Challenge

We did the Culinary Challenge, the culinary challenge is where we have to find a recipe that will impress the judges, we decided we do one that has something to do with fish. For more information click on the link below to find out what we made.

The Terrible Thing That Happened to Barnaby Brocket

Primary 3 to 7 read a book called The Terrible Thing That Happened to Barnaby Brocket. It was written by John Boyne and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. It’s about about a boy who disobeys the laws of gravity and he go’s on outstanding adventures. He goes on amazing adventures to Toronto New York and a lot of  other places too. I enjoyed reading the book. At the end we did a competition called The   UKLA Competition. In the competition you could choose whether you did a drama or a collage or anything else that was possible. We picked a collage and what we did on the collage was scissors to represent when his mother Elanor cut a hole in a rucksack which held him to the ground, then the pictures of who he met on his journeys what he had in common with them and where he went.

All the Seas

We’re taking part in an Education Scotland Learn Cat project called All the Seas. On Wednesday the 19th of February  it nice day so went to the Marina. Why did we…. because we went to collected sea samples. We put on our boots on and plastic gloves because the water could be polluted and we took water bottles because to put the sea samples in. When we’re finished doing the samples  then were collecting shells and rocks.  We were making a competition who ever thew rock the farthest  wins. Charlotte and Me won. Jennifer found seaweed from the sea. I found mussel shells and broken shell. Everybody threw rocks in the sea at the same time and it make a big splash. Then we have to write about it.

Athletes Poster

We were drawing posters for the Commonwealth games.  We had to do athletes posters for athletes rooms it will go into athletes rooms. We had to do it in our sketch books first. We had to draw our people  and put colour in the people so we know what colours to colour them in. We had to draw any sport of the Commonwealth games. We had to do it in colouring penciles, as we could not use filet tip pens because you will it in the other side of the paper. we had to do our drawings big so the athletes can see when their in there room. When we all finished our posters we had to vote for the best poster we had to pick eight of them so they can go to the Commonwealth games. We put different things on our posters like the different sports like swimming,running,  meddles, trophies, basketball tennis and the year.  We also  had to write post cards with our address and our name and our school address so the athletes  know who did the poster and the school.

Nicola Balfour Visit and Mia, Abby and Kerry’s Drama

11/02/14

We had a visit from Nicola Balfour from the NHS Shetland to tell us more about fish. She taught  us that they were different types of fish which are either white fish, shell fish and oily fish.We also learned that oily fish can help with Stiff joints: that means whey your older eating oily fish helps your sore joints, Clear eyesight: so fish is like sort of like carrots to help you see in the dark, Brain:omega 3 is a good fat that you get from fish, Heart: that means it stop you from getting blockages that can stop your blood getting around your body,Essential nutrients: seafood provides the body with many essential nutrients, fish and shellfish are also excellent sources of many vitamins including vitamins A and D, Stomach: A diet rich in fish oils can help protect us against serious diseases that could happen in a none fish diet, Skin: Not only does omega-3 help protect the harmful effects of the UV damage but eating lots of  fish can also help with the symptoms of skin conditions .

17/02/17

Mia, Abby and Kerry made a drama about what they learned from the visit from Nicola Balfour. Most of the lines they said were from cards that Nicola kindly lent to them so they could remember  what fish was good . For they also mentioned a tiny bit about having a balanced diet but they really focused in on fish. They also talked about how the fish ends up on your plate. How it starts of being caught, then being harvested, then transported, then at the fish market  were factory’s by it, then processing , then to the fish mongers and then you  by it and cook it for you tea and that’s  how the fish gets your plate. They also discussed what fish go under the categories  white fish, oily fish and shell fish.

P.E Badminton

On Thursday we do P.E. We are doing Badminton. We need to go on a bus to Mid Yell which takes 15 minuets because we do P.E in the leisure centre. Some of us were playing games of badminton in my class. I played Charlotte, Melissa, Kirsty and Lana. I won all of them 🙂  Mr Williamson  is the one who teaches the lesson but he leaves some of us to just keep playing games. I enjoy doing badminton. I go to Badminton club every Monday. When we started doing in it P.E then I wanted to join the club. I learned how to do some different serves  in the club. We play singles and doubles. Doubles is when you play with a partner. In the club there are about 15 people and in Burravoe Primary School there are Bradley, Charlotte and I.

Cooking for the Culinary Challenge

On Wednesday the school cooked for the Culinary challenge. We cooked haddock witch was fresh fish caught in Shetland by a local fishing boat. First we washed our hands, Then we put some red chilli curry paste on top of the fish using a spoon. Next we wrapped the fish in tinfoil, but we gave it some space to breath, we folded all of the gaps so there where no gaps. Then Jennifer put the fish in the oven to cook for 15 mins, but while the fish was cooking, we made the salad. In the salad was lettuce, avocado  and cucumber with a drizzle of honey on top of the salad. When we made the salad we cooked some rice (250g for 15 mins).  Then the fish came out it smelt lovely and fishy. Then we got our plates my groups coloured plate was green. Once we got our plates we  put the food on the plate very carefully so it looked very tidy. We walked round a table looking at all the plates of food and then it was the hard part voting, for the plates of food, but number 1 won so that  was the one going to the challenge. We cooked the food because it was for the Gameon Scotland Culinary Challenge.You might need to put the link into the URL bar. We cooked the for Bruni Darussalam because that is our second team to support.

Thorsten Olaffson and his Squad Visit School

The last weekend in February is always Cullivoe Up Helly Aa (Fire Festival). Cullivoe is at the north end of our island. The galley burning is on Friday night but the Jarl (David Spence in his other life!) and his squad do their visiting on Thursday. They start at the south end of the island and come to see us on Thursday morning.

They always sing to us and then let us look at their helmets, shields, axes etc. It’s great fun and some of the people from Burravoe come to school to share the visit.

Thank you Bradley for doing the videoing.

These are the words of the Up Helly Aa song. The other songs are the Jarl’s own.

From grand old Viking centuries Up-Helly-A’ has come,
Then light the torch and form the march, and sound the rolling drum:
And wake the mighty memories of heroes that are dumb;
The waves are rolling on.

Chorus: Grand old Vikings ruled upon the ocean vast,

Their brave battle-songs still thunder on the blast;
Their wild war-cry comes a-ringing from the past;
We answer it “A-oi”!
Roll their glory down the ages,
Sons of warriors and sages,
When the fight for Freedom rages,
Be bold and strong as they!
Of yore, our firey fathers sped upon the Viking Path;
Of yore, their dreaded dragons braved the ocean in its wrath;
And we, their sons, are reaping now their glory’s aftermath;
The waves are rolling on
Report a Glow concern
