The Swan 2014

On Tuesday 18th June Burravoe school went on the Swan and it was fun. First we went in the down stairs which is the inside bit. The crew told us how heavy things could be and some of the things were weighed tunnes and Mia and I pulled the rope on the pully to help us pull up the hach up. After that we got a sail up and we got the for sail and then we got the jib sail up. the first sail at the front is called the Jib sail and the second one is called the For sail. I liked it when we all pulled the rope to get the sails up because it was fun. After all the pulling we had to make a spiral shape with all the ropes.

The Swan Visit

We went on the swan we went down the ladders we used a pulley that    hanged on the roof to open the lid on the table. We went in the bunk bed. We went back up the ladder we were moving we pulled up the sail. I rolled the rope I put it under the rail so people don’t trip over it. I steer the wheel when the engine was turned off.  I did tidy more ropes up when the engine turn on. We sat down it was rocky on the swan.

The Swan is a boat that caught herring and they were about another 400 other Herring boats. We went to the Burravoe pier we had to go on the Norholm to get to the Swan.  The Swan looked small comparing to the Norholm then we went over the deck of the Norholm and on the Swan we sat on the side till everyone got on. Then we went inside the boat we all sat on a chair and talked for a while then we pulled a rope what was on a pulley then you pulled a rope and the table lid opened up in the table inside the table was cereal boxes. Then we sailed we had to put up the sails first a bit later we got to steer the boat then we went back.

The Swan Trip

We went on the Swan. The Swan is an old fishing boat. When we first got on we put on life jackets then we went to the living area which had a table with comfy seats and bunk beds. Under the seats they stored food and drinks for their journeys. They have a pulley in the table. A pulley is a box made into to a table it is too heavy to lift so they have a string to help lift it. Inside the pulley was cereal and biscuits. Then we went up the stairs to the deck to start sailing. When we got farther out then we had to put the sails up. We had to pull up the Jib sail and the Foresail. We had a hard afternoon pulling up those sails. I really enjoyed it.

The Trip On The Swan

We had to go on the Norholm to go on the Swan but we had lifejackets on  Gib helped us climb on the Swan. We  went down the stairs we all opened the table with a pulley and we had to pull the rope. Then we all squeezed in one bunk Neil was squeezed in the corner.  We went up stairs Rory talked with us about the jib sail then we pulled the rope so the sail went up. We got to steer but Rory helped us we had to avoid the island with the white light. Abby put the rope in one pile  so no one would trip over then we did roll it in a round pizza shape.

The Swan

We went to the Swan we drove down to the pier in Miss Breyley, Jenifer and Julia’s cars. When we got there we clambered across the Norholm where we put on our life jackets and went on the swan. When we got on the swan we went down to the main saloon which use to be the fish hut. We climbed down  the ladder we sat around the table until everyone got down then we got a pulley to pull up a big flap which had a surprise inside. Emer pulled up the pulley and found cornflakes and a packet of hobnobs and Eilish went and made us juice I lowered down the hatch. After that we  took  of our shoes and saw how many of us we could fit in the one bunk and we got six of us in the bunk it was squishy. After we squished  ourselves out we but back on our shoes then we went back up the ladder and then we sat down and the boat started to move and I got to steer then we hoisted the sail and we started sailing. After that we sat down and Abby coiled up the rope to keep it nice and tidy and so no one slipped on it. Then some more people steered and then the people who weren’t steering turned the sail by pulling a rope . Then we headed back to land steered by Rosie when we got back we climb across the Norholm again and then went back to the school and had our lunch with the Swan crew and Julia. I had fun and I think everyone else did too.

Explaining about The Norholm

This morning Gib and Marianne came in to have a chat about The Norholm (which is their boat); Cullivoe came along to because they are having a trip to see the Norholm today, Our trip is on Thursday.

This is what I learnt;  I found out that, the Norholm has approximately 180,000 smolts onboard in two different tanks; the tanks can hold approximately 90,000 fish. To make things quicker the Norholm uses a helicopter, to move the smolts in a box; the box can hold 3,000 smolts. When they pick up the smolts which are in the tanks, there is a pipe which sucks up the fish, and then the fish go on a counting machine type thing, then the smolts are put in salmon cages.

The Norholm takes smolts from the Loch Ness where the smolts have been in fresh water and then transferred in to the salt water. When plotting the route that the Norholm goes on they make sure they know what the forecast is, the skipper is the decision maker. They have two skippers, Gib and Raymond, the reason they have two skippers is because the boat is always working and the crew need some rest and still make money.

The Norholm has gone right down to Oben which is over 708.11km away from Shetland. The Norholm sometimes go over to Bergan in Norway (which is near Lapland) It’s about the distance to get to Aberdeen from Shetland.

At the end of the presentation both schools got given an iPad Mini, we were are all very grateful to Gib and Marianne.

Burravoe Carnival 2014!

On Saturday the 14th of June was the Burravoe Carnival 2014. The floats was: Frozen, Themes R Overrated, Father ted, Caravan Club Flower Power, Anderson Hippies, Da Rockers, The Jarl Squad, The Fire Engine and Da Music Boat. The Frozen float by the Burravoe bairns got 1st with £100, My float called Themes R Overrated got 2nd with £50 and Father Ted got 3rd with £25. All of the money gooes to a charity of the floats choise. We were working on our float for 5 days. It was Me, Jayde, Lucy, Nicole J, Nicole H, Ashleigh and Laura who was working on the float. We had to paint the sign, we stray painted dads rope pink, green and orange for the safty rope. We put hay bales on so that we could sit on them. We cbought sweeties to throw out to the people watchign and we bought silly string and fake snow to spray at people. We also decorated the tractor and attached colourful string to the back. We were at the hall and then we all got sprayed by not shaken enough silly string sprayed over us by people on our float! I still havn’t gotten  it off my clothes because it wasn’t shaken it was just pure liquid. I got annoyed at Ashleigh and threw little bits of confetti at her. We had 48 party poppers. We had 118 people, I was a pirate, we had a cat, a fairy, Tigger, a Mexican, a monkey, Minnie mouse, guns “n” roses guy and a 80’s hipster. We were meant to have 19 people but lots of them either didn’t go on a float or went on the Anderson Hippies float. We tried to spray them with silly string the most. When we got to the weaving shed then there was a barbecue and we were all hungry so we had hot dogs, burgers and chicken bites. Later on in the night Lucy and I played fiddle for a while. It was getting late so we went to granny and daas house and I played fiddle the their visitors. I went home at about 12.00 and I was really tired.

The walk to the polytunnel

On Monday it was a very nice day and we decided we could go out for a walk to the poly tunnel we put sun cream on and sun hats and in the poly tunnel there were strawberries cabbage lettuce carrots leeks onions beetroot sweetcorn parsnips.  Then Jennifer gave us a strawberry from a basket that was hanging from the roof and the strawberries were very yummy. Now I know the difference between Jennifers strawberries and our strawberries because the poly tunnels strawberries has more warmness and our strawberries are out side and it is cold out so if it is cold it will grow slowly.
