Harvesting Bere

This morning we harvested our bere crop which is a traditional Shetland cereal. The stalk will be used for bedding for animals and the grain will be ground to make flour and bread. First  we went to our patch and the big ones cut near the bottom with scissors and the little ones collected the chopped bere. After we tied the chopped bere into a sheaf and took lots of pictures then we carried it down to the bike place and layed the sheaf upright to dry and ripen.

Harvesting Bere

Today we harvested the bere (Shetland crop that is used alot) that we grew outside with our other cereals. Mary(Our Crofting Connections crofting partner) said that it would be time for us to cut the bere. Us four big ones got big scissors to cut it with. The peerie ones holded all the bere, It was very tall because we had to cut it at the bottom because we wanted straw aswell. We had a lot more than we expected because they were close toghether before we cut them. We tied all the bere toghether with some string and we layed it in the bike shelter so the rain doesn’t drown it. We hope the sun will come out and dry it for us so we can enter it into the East Yell Show.

Trip to the Cookingbus

Yesterday we went to Lerwick. first we went to the shetland Amenity trust because we were going to do a work shop with Robina about rocks, two men called Paul and Howard that shoed us bugs under the microscopes. we got split up into two groups the little ones went with Robina first witch mean that we would be going with the two men then we got split up into two groups agein I went with Kay we didn’t like some of the bugs because they were very spotty and patchy.  some of them were very beautiful. then we went with the other man  he shoed us the bumble bee  it looked a bit like  a small cuddly teddy  then we looked at a hover fly it had a long nose next we looked at the lace wing it was my favourite one. we went with Robina we remembered about the lava rock and we saw a rock that had a fosil of a piece of seaweed in it Robina shoed us a type of rock called felsite.

we went to the museum with Robena she shoed us  all the rocks and some of the felsite knives that they made for decoration.Magnetite was used for making steel. felsite is a very beautiful rock when it is polished. it was used 5,000 years ago. it was made into display knives. Schist could be carved into things as big as mill stones.Chromite could be ised for making steel. Soteamatite could be used to make dust. Aggreyate was used for making road chips. copperour was used for its copper, it was heated to get the copper out. then we went to the cooking bus it was a big lorry that folds out into a kitchen it was very fun we got shown what to do then we worked in pairs and used flower shakers, pastry, tomatoes, cheese, basil, olives and basil pesto.  we made it into basil and tomato tartlets. The Cooking Bus

Today we went on The Cooking Bus, but before we went there we went and saw Robina at the Amenity Trust becasue that is where her workshop is. When we were in her workshop there was Rocks around her office but we got split in two groups. One group went and looked at insects with the Howard and Paul (Theyshared the office with  Robina.) I went with lucy to look at the insects. It was scary looking at the moths in the case because i am terrified of them. It was also scary looking through the Microscope at them. The favourite bug I looked at was the Lace Wing . We learned about one of the bees that ate the crops, They lay their eggs and eat the crops to make them grow. The groups swapped and us big ones went to look at the rocks (which I am glad we did last so I had time to chill after looking at the insects.) She showed us all the rocks she got from a lady who was really intrested in rocks but she gave them to Robina to look at. She showed us her fossel rocks, One of the fossels had a fish scale pattern on it and the other had a plant trunk scraping on it.

We went to the muesuem with Robina. Us big ones looked at all the rocks and had to find out how oil is made. Oil is made by layers of rocks pressing down on the oil wich makes it rise up to the surface. Oil tank collecter pick it up off the sea and use it.  Robina showed us a nice crystal rock in the muesuem it loked abit like iceicle up side down.

Robina went back to her work while we went to the Co-op to choose our own fruit and vegtables. We all liked Pink Lady apples so we took some of them. Brydon wanted to try a lime and I wanted to have Corn on the cob, but we had way more fruit and veg than that. The peerie ones went back on the bus but us big ones stayed and helped to pack up the fruit and veg in bags.

We went to the King Harold Street playpark to have our lunch. We had Flapjacks or Homemade biscuits for pudding. When we finished we went and played in the playpark. I liked playing on the bridge you walked across in the air.

We went to the Clickimin to go to the toilet before we went on the Cooking Bus. The Cooking bus was parked right outside the Clickimin. We got to the cooking bus and had to stand on a blue mat which they called the holding mat, Because they didn’t want people running about on the bus when they first came in (even though we would never do that because it is rude.) We gave Jem and Sue some of our Shetland black tattie we grew and they really appreciated it. We went and washed our hands at the sink which you use to wash our hands in. Sue showed us how to make Basil and tomato tartlets. Us big ones went and shared a table toghether (Me ,Brydon ,Lucy and James) and made them. We used Pastry, Tomatos, Basil , olives and more. We cleaned up our own mess so Sue and Jem didn’t need too. I really learn ed how to coook healthy becasue whenehter I cook I make un healthy things like cakes but I think I shall cook more hellthy now.

Our kale plants

On friday we went to Mary and Magnies, We went their to see how much our kale plants had grown since we planted them. Mary gave us a bit of her field to see if it would be diffrent than planting it in our raise bed. She gave us four kale plants each, We planted them on the 28 of June. We saw that Marys beetroot was smaller that ours. Mary has lots of nice flowers in her garden like honeysuckles and marigolds but she had way more than just that. Mary also showed us her gooseberrie tree. Mary gave us homemade Jam and Lemoncurd.Magnie had sprayed their eves with caterpillar spray to make the caterpillers die, so they don’t eat their plants. We saw Mary and Magnies puppies. They shall sell one of the puppies and keep the other, We can watch tthem grow just like the plants.
