Going for a walk
Today we went on a long walk to video some of Burravoe. It was really windy so we got all our hats and things on and decided what to video and speak about them. We first walked to the Kirk to film some facts about it. James and Charlotte spoke and Brydon filmed the bit about the kirk. It is a Scottish Episcopalian Kirk. We walked up the Neepaback road and we stopped and filmed Ryan’s kye, its not too far from the school. You can usually smell them in the summer! Mia and Kerry spoke and Kay filmed. We walked a bit further and filmed some hens. All of them were camera shy. They were in a park at the bottom of a hill, above them were some old croft houses and planticrubs. Lucy and Honor spoke and James filmed. We battled the wind to half way down the road and filmed a quick bit about the crofts and continued to battle our way to the Marina. We stopped and filmed the NEW public toilets. Brydon and Bradley spoke and Kay filmed. The toilets are important to Burravoe so tourists and fishermen can use toilets and showers and the caravans and camper vans can have electricity. We stomped along a track to a white gate that wouldn’t open! We took ages to open it but we sent 3 big ones over and as Kay was coming over Jennifer opened it. We took a video of the old pier and the noost and James spoke. Then Miss Breyley took a video of the cannon and some of the horrible weather! We went up the stairs and videoed our cook’s house. We carried on up the road and took a video of Davie’s chickens and lobster creels. We got to the top of the hill and took a panorama of most of Burravoe then we went to the school for piece.

At The Post Office
This morning Leah,Melissa and I posted postcards at the post office. Mrs Breyley took us in her car because it was pouring with rain. We posted post cards to USA, Australia and Hawes Primary School in England. I posted mine to Mrs Yollis’ class in USA. 6 of us sent to Australia and 4 of us sent to USA and 1 of us sent to England. We got to put our stamps in a pot of watery sponge. The reason why we were posting our postcards is because we joined in the Postcard Project. We have sent 23 cards altogether. .

Postcard Project
We are taking part in a Postcard project with Schools around the world where we exchange postcards and tell them what it is like living in Shetland. Last Monday we wrote some postcards to send to other schools. On the postcard I sent there were Orcas and Puffins on it. We also got our first postcard from Class B4, Reefton School in New Zealand!
Here is the postcard from them!

Posting the Postcards
On Friday James, Kay, Lucy and me went to the post office. The post office is actualy someones house with a post office on one side. We drove there because it was raining but we could of walked. We arrived and had our picture taken.
We went inside into the hallway and there is a hole on the left where you post and receive things. We showed Gilda the postcards and we had to put stamps that need to be licked. We took turns to lick and stick then we had to put on air mail stickers and we didn’t have to lick them.
At the end we had to work out how much it would cost to post so we did 67p x 10 and the anser is £6.70.

The Lewis Chessmen
On Wednesday we went to the Shetland Museum to see the Lewis Chessmen that were found on a beach on Lewis. When we got there Brydon and I had a game of chess on a big chess board.
When we finished, Yvonne the Museum Education Officer and Lucy the Historian came to show us the Lewis Chessmen. My favourite one was the Berserker Warder that was biting his shield but they didn’t have him, but they did have a picture of him. I found out that the Berserkers took drugs before the battle to give them courage and to scare the enemy. I learned that they were about 1000 years old. I found out that they were made out of walrus tusks and repairs made out of whales tooth. We got to draw our favourite one, mine was the Berserker. We got split up in two groups, I was in the big ones group. Lucy asked us some questions and recorded the answers and then we got to make a model of one of the Chessmen.

The Lewis Chessmen
On Wednesday we went to the museum to see The Lewis Chessmen for a school trip. The Lewis Chessmen were found on the Outer Hebrides berried on the isle of Lewis. The Lewis Chessmen are very valuable; they are made out of walrus ivory or whale’s teeth. Lucy and Yvonne gave us the tour.
King
The King is the most important piece of chess; the King sits next to the Queen and the Bishop.
Queen
The Queen is the second most important piece of chess and she sits next to the King and another Bishop.
Bishop
The Bishops always hold curly staffs and they resemble people that go to church. One sits next to the Queen and the Knight and the other sits next to the King and the other Knight.
Knight
The Knight Chess piece is a person riding a horse and it is the only chess piece that can jump over other chess pieces. They sit next to Bishops and Berserkers.
Berserker
Berserkers were made biting their shields and they also had googly eyes because they resembled people that took drugs and fought enemies.
