CAREER LONG PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

Welcome to the 2023/24 session Professional Learning programme for Scottish Borders schools, early years settings and support staff. At Scottish Borders Council we are committed to providing high quality professional learning opportunities for staff at all levels. We place high value on the importance of professional learning as having a direct impact on the quality of teaching and learning and therefore outcomes for children and young people.

When a wide range of high-quality, sustained professional learning experiences are undertaken, teachers are more likely to inspire pupils and provide high-quality teaching and learning experiences, enabling learners to achieve their best. (GTCS)

This guide should be used when planning professional learning for staff teams and individuals, either as part of whole school self-evaluation or through the process of Professional Review and Development. The professional learning programmes and opportunities are aligned to the SBC Education strategic priorities, namely ‘Learning, Teaching and Assessment’ and ‘Inclusion and Wellbeing’.

All schools and practitioners have access to two fantastic bespoke online learning platforms.

The SBC LEARNS online modules, providing high quality input and reflection questions covering every element of the SBC Learning, Teaching and Assessment Framework.

Simply use this link and use our interactive ThingLink to find the module for you or your team.

Alternatively, go directly to the School House Team to find all the modules > SchoolHouse Academy (a GLOW Team)

To support these messages across the Early Years, the SBC Early Years Portal also contains a wealth of powerful learning material and resources.

Simply use this link to access the GLOW Blog.

Phonics Online Training

We have an additional 50 phonics online training licences. Please consider this in PRD discussion and when allocating new classes. This is a great resource for new teachers into P1. If you have any staff who would like a licence, please ask them to email CLPL@scotborders.gov.uk and instructions will be sent on how to register.

This course is divided into 14 ‘modules’. Each module is sub-divided into lessons, or ‘parts’. Each ‘part’ contains a video tutorial, printable notes/video slides, links to downloads, additional video, resources, research papers and further recommended reading. Each ‘lesson’ in Modules One to Twelve should be completed systematically and the ‘quiz’/progress check completed before the student proceeds to the next lesson/part.

At any point during the course, the student may click on the ‘Contact Lesson Teacher’ or ‘Contact Course Teacher’ button for email support.

Please note: There are 20+ hrs of video/audio – each with tests/quizzes – so the minimum time to complete the course would be around 22 – 24 hrs. This doesn’t take into account recommended further reading/downloads etc.

Accounts remain active for as long as it takes you to complete the course – and for at least 12 months thereafter – and may only be deleted if they have been dormant for 12 months.
