The Teacher Induction Scheme (TIS) provides a guaranteed one-year training post in a local authority to every eligible student graduating with a teaching qualification from one of Scotland’s universities.

GTC Scotland, in partnership with the Scottish Government, is responsible for the administration of the scheme. The Teacher Induction Scheme allows probationer teachers to be considered for full registration within one school year (190 teaching days).

The Teacher Induction Scheme offers a number of benefits, including:

  • a maximum class contact time of 0.82 full time equivalent (GTC Scotland endorsed)
  • dedicated time set aside for Professional Learning
  • access to a teacher for support throughout the induction year

Please see the NQT Support Handbook for detailed information on the Teacher Induction Scheme. The scheme is not compulsory; probationers can choose to follow the Flexible Route instead.

The Flexible Route is a way to complete probationary service for teachers who:

  • have decided to opt out of the Teacher Induction Scheme
  • are not eligible to join the Teacher Induction Scheme
  • can’t commit to a full-time post
  • want to complete their probationary period somewhere other than a Scottish state school
  • are registered in more than one subject, and are looking to gain full registration in their second subject
  • It is vital that Flexible Route Probationers notify the headteacher of the school that they have a probationary period to complete. The school should then make arrangements to have relevant support put in place for the probationer.

The length of service that a Flexible Route probationer will need to complete is dependent on their circumstances.

Schools should contact the Professional Learning and Development Officer for guidance as soon as they are aware that they have a Flexible Route Probationer.
