SBLearn Mandatory Training Modules

SBlearn is the Council’s online learning platform and all staff are required to complete some mandatory online training and refresh it when required.  The Council Management Team (CMT) monitor the completions on a quarterly basis.  Please select the link to learn more about the platform and how to get started. A *Learning Pathway is assigned to all staff to cover all mandatory online learning which includes replacement and refreshed courses. 

Learning Pathways are a structured set of resources (internet links, eLearning courses, events and assignments) with a specific objective or training purpose and can be accessed by click on the Learning pathways logo of the SBlearn page.  This area is where you’ll find all your training programmes to complete, e.g. will include all mandatory training, mandatory training for a manager and mandatory training for particular services and/or posts.

 All Managers  – Please note that you if you manage staff there is also additional mandatory training you have to complete every two years and are listed in your learning pathways.

The following are the current group of mandatory eLearning for ALL staff:

Adult Support and Protection (Refresh every two years – please check this is up-to-date) Approx. 20 minutes

This course is designed to help you understand your legal and professional duties and responsibilities in relation to adult support and protection.

An Introduction to the Climate Emergency Approx. 40 minutes

The Council has set a corporate target in line with Scottish Government ambition to be net zero by 2045.  The Council approved a series of Climate Change Route Map Priority Actions in March 2022, to help set us on this net zero pathway.  Staff training and awareness is essential to the development and delivery of a net zero carbon and Council and Scottish Borders and to ensure that both are climate resilient.  By increasing the ability of staff to assess impacts and opportunities, the Council will be able to identify, plan and deliver effective carbon reduction activity across services.  An early step in supporting this aim is this mandatory online training module on the Climate Emergency. 

Equality & Diversity Online Approx. 10 minutes

Scottish Borders Council provide the essential Equality & Diversity training to all staff, as you are expected to demonstrate ‘due regard’ to the Public Sector Equality Duty to eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act (2010).

Fire Safety Awareness (Refresh every two years – please check is this up-to-date) Approx. 15 minutes

This short course will provide you with the essential knowledge on fire prevention and actions to take if a fire occurs.

Health & Safety Awareness Approx. 20 minutes

This 20 minute course will give you a basic background and understanding of general Health & Safety practices and introduce you to the control measures required to reduce risks in the workplace.

Reminder Information Management Training (Refresh annually – please check this is up-to-date) Approx. 45 minutes

This eLearning course provides staff the key areas of information management such as: Handling requests for information; Data sharing; Information security; Personal data breaches; and Records management. It should take around 45 minutes.

Introduction to Complaints Handling – Modules 1 & 2 Approx. 15-20minutes

As part of the Councils obligations towards complaints, modules one & two of the Complaints Handling training is mandatory for all staff and will make you aware of the Council’s Complaint Handling Procedure (CHP), recognise what is and what is not a complaint so you can be mindful of your role in the CHP.

PREVENT (Awareness & Refresher) (Refresh every two years – please check this is up-to-date) Approx. 25-30minutes

These Government courses provide staff with an awareness on the PREVENT duty, “the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”. The refresh course should then be completed every two years thereafter, if you have not already completed the PREVENT Awareness, search using PREVENT to locate it.

Protecting Children – Everybody’s is Responsible Approx. 20 minutes

Everyone has a part to play in the protection of our children and this public protection module will help you understand the signs to look out for and who to report any concerns to.

New HTs should ensure they book onto the following training ASAP:

It is also mandatory that all line managers who are completing PRD / PU with their staff should have completed the Coaching for PRD or Coaching for Success programme.
