The Appraisal and Competency Framework for all staff, except teachers, has been revised and updated following our pilot and is available on Business World replacing previous PRD (Personal Review and Development) and paper based approaches. Please note that it is mandatory for all non-teaching staff to complete this process on an annual basis.

How often should appraisals take place?

  • Appraisals should take place annually within the financial year, ideally between April and December.
  • They can be online by video link on Microsoft Teams or in a suitable workplace setting where you or your manager has access to the intranet.
  • Staff completing appraisals will contribute to SBC’s common purpose and outcomes, as well as the competencies for both you and your team ensuring consistent and successful teamwork that reflects our values.

What are the benefits?

  • Better communication between yourself and line manager.
  • Clarify expectations from you and what support you need from your line manager.
  • Supporting SBC’s corporate aims and values with role, developmental and competency (‘behaviour’) related objectives.
  • Agree your objectives and plan for your future development, enabling you to manage your personal development and identify a career path that is right for you.

This Appraisal and Competency Framework forms part of the People Planning process which is vital to the success of SBC’s transformational, corporate, finance and service plans.

What you need to do next

  • Begin by familiarising yourself with the Video Tutorials, Appraisal Guidelines and Competency Framework document.
  • Agree a date and time and whether this will be via Microsoft Teams online or face-to-face with your line manager.
  • Review the Objectives attached to find the agreed Objectives for your role / remit. If your role / remit is not listed please discuss and agree relevant objectives with your line manager.

Staff without digital access

Line managers can now sign onto a SBC enabled device on behalf of their staff and work their way through the appraisal form together.

Staff with a personal email account but no digital access

All staff may request access to a space with a computer or laptop in a nearby Council building, to sign on and complete your appraisal form prior to meeting with your line manager.

Managers should ensure that this information is shared with all staff including those who don’t have access to an SBC email or laptop, making it clear that they will be able to access all the information they need.

We hope you find this new system helpful and practical.

If you have any queries, please speak to your line manager in the first instance. For further guidance, you can also email HR at: askhr@scotborders.gov.uk.
