Dyslexia Friendly Schools

What is Dyslexia?

Supports, Interventions and Resources

All classes at Girvan Primary use Dyslexia Friendly approaches in their teaching and learning. All classes in the school have their own individual trolleys including a range of resources, such as literacy mats, maths mats, letter and number formation resources, fidget toys, a range of different coloured overlays and finger grips etc. There are also resources available for all children to use in the library, Nurture room and Learning for Sustainability too. Every child in the school identified with a literacy difficulty has their own personalised learning toolkits for use across the school. These are kept in class however packs can be made for home use upon request to pupil support.

Concerns about my child

If you have concerns around your child’s learning, in the first instance please contact the Class Teacher. The Class Teacher, through discussion with the Support and Wellbeing Team, can then work to determine appropriate next steps. If it is identified that assessments to identify barriers to learning are required, these are carried out by the Class Teacher and Pupil Support Teacher.

Dyslexia Inclusive Practice Award

We have been awarded the new South Ayrshire Dyslexia and Inclusive Practice Award.

As well as continuing to build on our good practice within the school, we are focusing on the following areas to further improve: resources (including ICT), Continued Professional Development and parental involvement.

·    Mr Mair – Literacy Lead
