Primary 4 – Mrs McFadzean

Welcome to Braehead Primary 4

Our teacher is Mrs McFadzean. Our school assistant is Miss Cochrane. We have an incredibly busy year ahead of us.

Literacy

We have introduced “The Write Stuff” as our writing programme for Primaries 4 and 4/5, and the children are learning strategies to develop higher level vocabulary skills. The writing we are producing is amazing and we are enjoying learning these new strategies and skills. In Term 2, we will be looking at writing a narrative story about a blue umbrella who falls in love with a red umbrella. We have spelling and grammar lessons to support our writing skills and have a range of fun spelling activities to help us learn.

We do daily reading in class and take part in the Accelerated Reader and EPIC programmes. These help us to develop higher order thinking and reading comprehension skills. A new reading book will be sent home weekly for homework.

We also have the opportunity to talk and listen in groups and present information and other ideas to the class.

Numeracy and Maths

In Term 2, we will be looking at basic algebra and times tables sums. Please practise these with your child/children at home.  The tables they should be learning are in their Term 2 targets.  We visit Miss Wilson, who is our Numeracy and Maths co-ordinator, once a week where she is teaching about time this term.  Pupils have opportunities to develop skills through Rapid Maths and the 5 Minute Box., We will also take part in the weekly “TT Rockstars” school competition. Sumdog is very popular with the children too and both this and TT Rockstars can be played at home.

Health and Wellbeing

We have P.E twice a week, once with Mrs McDonald our PE specialist. We have daily check ins to see how we are feeling and we have the opportunity to take part in groups to enhance our Health and Wellbeing, such as: Active Schools clubs and Ayr United after-school activities. Our P.E. slots are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rugby (which was on a Wednesday) finishes 30/11/22.

Other interesting information

Our IDL topic in Term 2 will be Electricity and we will take part in a range of experiments. In RME, we will be finding out about Christianity and stories from the Bible. We also have timetabled sessions in the garden area for outdoor learning and cooking lessons in the Pantry.

This year, the pupil groups will be up and running again, so some people from the class will be able to be a class rep. We have the Pupil Council, Dyslexia Friendly Schools, Rights Respecting Schools, Digital Leaders and the Eco/Fairtrade Group.

Our class members are:

  • Pupil Council – Connor O’ Hara
  • RRS – Jay Collins
  • Eco – William McKinnon and Lacie McNeill
