English as an Additional Language Support

Miss Cunningham is our EAL (English as an Additional Language) Specialist Teacher. She supports children in St James’ Primary who are bilingual and who have English as an additional language (EAL). Speaking 2 or more languages is very beneficial and an asset to a child’s development but it sometimes means that they find school
work and homework difficult.

Miss Cunningham is here to help. She has a blog
http://ealrenfrewshire.blogspot.co.uk and over the next few months she will be using it to support home learning and share ideas for parents to help support their children improve their English language acquisition. She would love you to connect to the blog and use some of the resources and ideas at home.

Miss Cunningham has also set up a Google Classroom for our EAL learners. The class code is Google: a6ozzyh

Active Schools Online Workshops and Challenges

We are sorry that our clubs and camps have had to be cancelled for a short while, but we are establishing something exciting and opening online workshops for all the family to take part in at home. That’s right – we will be hosting our workshops online to keep young people (and parents/guardians) active during this time, educating them and keeping their skills up to date. It’s important to us that we still deliver a service of value and provide young people with some normality in these times.

We are working in the background at the moment to establish our first Dance Workshop that will be released on Wednesday 25th March 2020. In order to take part in this workshop please visit https://renfrewshire-leisure.class4kids.co.uk/ and sign up now. You will receive an automatic booking confirmation immediately and then on Wednesday you will receive a link to an online video which you can complete as many times as you like (please ensure to check spam/junk folders for the automated emails).

We will also post about this on our social media channels to make sure everyone is kept up to date. As an organisation during these challenging times, we just want to say a massive thank you for your continued support. We also want to thank everyone that join us on our digital journey and please ensure to tag @RL4Leisure on Facebook and @RLSportServices on Twitter using the hashtag #RLSportAtHome to share your families dance moves.

Kind Regards

Robert Campbell

Digital Learning Letter

Dear Parent/Carer,

You will be aware of the announcement to close schools this Friday. We understand that this will cause a disruption to the normal pattern of learning for your child or young person and we want to do all we can to support them in making use of digital tools and online learning resources such as Glow.

Please see the guidance below from Renfrewshire Council

Helping Children and Young People Manage in Unsettling Times

There has been a lot of coverage in the media and social media about the Coronavirus and it is easy to feel overwhelmed by this. It is understandable that children and young people are feeling anxious too. They might find it difficult to understand what they are seeing and hearing about the Coronavirus and so they can be particularly vulnerable to feelings of stress, anxiety and sadness. Alongside educational establishments, parents can help provide opportunities where feelings can be discussed within a safe context, as well as maintaining a sense of normality, routine and calm. Supporting children and young people in this way will help them to process and manage their feelings and build resilience.

Here are some suggestions to help:
