Home to School Transport Information for Parents/Carers

Key messages for parents/carers:

Dedicated school transport will be regarded as an extension of the school estate for primary aged pupils, therefore it is not necessary to maintain distance between children and young people of all ages.

During a period of enhanced level 4 restriction

For secondary aged pupils maintaining appropriate distance is recommended and arrangements should be made wherever possible for each passenger to sit on their own.

Important mitigations and further information on school transport is detailed below:-

· Children / young people must not board dedicated school or public transport if they, or a member of their household, have symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19).

· If a child or young person develops symptoms while at school they will be sent home. They must not travel on regular home-to-school transport. The school should contact the parent/carer who should make appropriate and safe arrangements to collect the child or young person. In this situation, we strongly advise the wearing of a face covering by the child or young person on the journey.

· When travelling on dedicated school transport, face coverings are required for most children (those clinically advised to wear a covering would be an exception).

· If travelling on public transport Scottish Government guidance should be adhered to in relation to face coverings / physical distancing.

· Parents should remind their child daily around hand hygiene and discourage them from touching their faces.

· Pupils should be encouraged to watch their hands (or use sanitiser) prior to leaving the house for the school bus. Steps will be taken on arrival at school and when departing from school for return journey to also do this.

· Parents require to remind their child of the importance of safety arrangements whilst on school transport, for example fastening of seatbelts themselves and good behaviour towards their peers and the driver/escort.

· The consumption of food / drink is not permitted on all home to school transport.

School Gates

Good Morning,

The Parent Club have developed a campaign to help parents to feel supported to abide by all current restrictions (both themselves and their children) throughout the phased return to schools and ELC settings, in order to keep schools and nurseries open, and to open for more pupils.  The key messages of the campaign are:

  • Adults wear face coverings at drop off/pick up
  • Stick to one adult at pick up/drop off
  • Adults keep 2 metres apart
  • Avoid car sharing
  • Self-isolate if anyone in your household has symptoms

These messages are aligned with the content of the recent letter from Professor Jason Leitch, which we circulated to all parents of ELC and P1-3 children.

We respectfully ask that all children should arrive at school between 8.55am and 9am sharp and that parents do not wait at school gates either before or after school to ensure there is no crowding at these times.

Sun Safety

Dear Parent/Carer,

During the upcoming spring and summer months, we hope to have the children learning and playing outdoors as much as possible. Sun safety is of the utmost importance, and your support will play a vital role in our efforts to ensure effective control measures, particularly with the application of sunscreen and the provision of water and sun hats. We would ask that you apply a long lasting sunscreen to your child/ren before they come to school, particularly for younger pupils who may not manage a top up during the day, as school staff are not permitted to assist with applications. A water bottle and sun hat/glasses are also advised, clearly labelled with the child’s name and class.

Many thanks for your continued support, as always, it is so appreciated.

Entry/Exit and Uniform Update (18.2.21)

Dear Parent/Carer,

We look forward to welcoming your child back to St James’ Primary School on Monday 22 February. Our aim is to make the transition back to school as smooth as possible for the children.

Entry and Exit

The school day will begin at 9am and finish at 3pm. Please avoid being early or late to reduce crowding. Please note the school gates will be closed promptly at 9am. After this time pupils should enter via the front door of the school. Teaching staff will be in the playground to welcome their class back on Monday.  We respectfully ask that parents do not access the school playground for the safety of all.

Primary 1 should enter and exit via the Porterfield Road gate.

Primary 2 should enter and exit via the Victoria Drive West gate. The P2 gate will be clearly marked.

Primary 3 should enter and exit via the Victoria Drive West gate. The P3 gate will be clearly marked.

The arrangements in place for siblings to enter and leave via the same gate prior to Christmas will still be in place.

Home to school transport arrangements will continue to be in place for children who are entitled. Please remember that children are required to wear face coverings on school transport.

Please remember to keep two metres distance from people outside of your household when waiting for your child to come out of school. Wearing a face covering is also strongly encouraged.

Uniform

Children should continue to wear the informal uniform of white polo shirt, grey/black jogging bottoms and grey/black jumper on their return to school. All children will be participating in outdoor learning daily. It is essential children have a waterproof jacket and appropriate footwear. It would be helpful if children also brought a change of clothes with them each day.
