At St Fergus’ we put learning at the heart of health and well-being as it provides a foundation for all other areas of learning .
Health and wellbeing Parentzone Scotland
Our children tackle a wide range of subjects within health and wellbeing such as personal health and safety, drug and alcohol abuse, road safety, anti- bullying and keeping healthy. Community Police Officers are invited to school to help support the education of our children in this area.
Physical Education
All pupils have a minimum of two hours of P.E. per week. Primary 1 to 7 have a range of opportunities to develop physical skills, encourage confidence and co-operation with others and to foster a positive attitude to health and fitness.
In conjunction with our Active Schools partners, the school also offers a very wide range of extra-curricular activities such as Football, Netball, Basketball and Archery.
Emotion Works
At St. Fergus’ we use an educational programme called Emotion Works to support children with their emotional learning and literacy development. Based around a visually supportive framework for learning and talking about emotions, the goal is to build emotional language and understanding in children and young people to help develop emotional competence and resilience.
The ‘Cog Model’ framework identifies seven categories of emotional knowledge and competence that link together to help show how ‘emotion works’. The links between the different cog categories demonstrate the causal connections between concepts such as emotion triggers, body sensations, emotion behaviours, intensity and regulation strategies.
St. Fergus’ Mental Health and Wellbeing Policy
At St Fergus’ Primary, we aim to promote positive mental health and wellbeing for every member of our staff and children/young people though nurturing relationships and the promotion of a positive establishment ethos. We will pursue this aim using both universal, whole establishment approaches and specialised targeted approaches aimed at vulnerable children/young people.
This document describes St Fergus’ Primary School’s approach to promoting positive mental health and wellbeing.
