Numeracy and Mathematics

(Number, Money and Measure, Shape, Position and Movement, Information Handling, Problem Solving and Enquiry)

The school offers a widely based and practical approach to the study of mathematics providing a range of activities from straightforward arithmetical problems, extending to practical activities relating to shape, volume, weight, measure, etc. There is a strong emphasis on the importance of children understanding the processes involved in their calculations, and in dealing with real problems, which the children encounter in their own environment.

Time is regularly spent on mental agility including practicing number facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to build pupils’ confidence, support problem-solving skills and provide a base for developing other aspects of mathematics. You can help at home by playing number games, by counting, reciting tables, using money and practicing telling the time.

Regular ongoing assessment ensures the pupils are given work suited to their particular level of ability.
