Pupil Council Update

Welcome to our Pupil Council blog. We will be updating our meetings each week. Please comment below if you have any questions or feedback about the information that we post.

This week we have been busy advertising some events that are coming up in our school!

Eassan and Murray worked on a letter which advertised the Bake Sale. Our bake sale will be on Friday 24th of March and the money raised will go towards Water Aid. We are hoping to bake cakes in classes and families can donate baking if they wish to contribute.  Pupils and families can come to the school to buy home-baking and raise money towards a great cause. For more information on Water Aid please visit www.wateraid.org

Red Nose Day is coming up on Friday 24th of March. Pupils can dress up in red for £1 and can buy red noses if they wish to do so. Any money raised will go towards Comic Relief.

Hazel and Amelia worked on invites to send out to families and members of the community for our showcase. Our showcase will be on Wednesday 29th of March between 6-7pm. People can come along to view our learning from our term and to take part in interactive experiences with us. Tea and Coffee will also be provided by the parent council. We look forward to seeing you!

Finally, we updated our Pupil Council wall with our news and information to share with the school.

First Ministers Reading Challenge

This week we have been busy filling in our reading passports. Each pupil is taking part on a reading journey where they are;

  • Setting themselves reading challenges
  • Exploring different types of books
  • Reviewing each book that they read
  • Recommending books that they have read to a friend.

P6/7 have lots of ideas to make our reading challenge exciting! They would like to have a book swap corner in the classroom and to create a visual display of all the books we have read as a class.

We will be celebrating our achievements so far during Book Week Scotland next week. We will post our learning experiences here so keep looking!

Take a look at our passports. We will keep them in our passport journey box throughout the year!

Our Beautiful Earth Movie

At the beginning of term we noticed that there was an Aberfeldy Film Festival where children could enter their movies. We were excited by this and wanted to make our entry.

In class we were learning about Climate Change and we wanted to make a movie to encourage people to look after our world so that future generations can enjoy it as much as we can.

We had made a trailer last year and this year we set the challenge of making a ten minute film. All of our filming was shot and edited using our class ipad. We were all given roles during the filming. These included, Prop Managers, Directors, Camera Crew, Actors, News Reporters and Editing Experts.

The film process involved:

  • Learning about Climate Change.
  • We began learning about the techniques of filming. Such as, long shots, close-ups, range, lighting, sound and using the camera correctly.
  • Through shared writing we created storyboards to map out our movie.
  • We scripted our movie and thought of locations to film.
  • Mr Gibson (a professional artist and illustrator) came in to help us to sketch out our puppets and to bring our characters to life.
  • We made our puppets and designed our costumes and props. This involved creating scenery.
  • We then began filming. We filmed in our classroom and around the village of Kenmore.
  • After we felt we had enough film. We began to piece our story together by editing on the ipad. This was a long process and it took a lot of thinking through to put it all together.
  • We then showed our film to parents at our Harvest Showcase where we were able to receive feedback on our movie.
  • We have now entered our film into the Aberfeldy Competition and are awaiting a response!

Skills we think we have developed:

  • Filming
  • Editing (Voice overs)
  • Acting
  • Co-operation skills
  • IT Skills
  • Using the ipad
  • Art skills
  • Design Skills
  • Scripting

Please take the time to watch our movie and leave us feedback after this post! Enjoy!

Weekly Update

  Food Technology

This week we got all of the spare food leftover from the ski trip  and we decided to see what we could make with it. We made a tuna pasta, a selection of delicious sandwiches and enjoyed eating them during our class picnic.

Art

In art, we drew ourselves as silhouettes and we then had to draw what we liked about ourselves inside. It was quite difficult to draw ourselves side on without looking at yourself. Some of us used the i-pads to make this easier by taking photos. – Suzie

P.E

In P.E we showed our games that we created with our peers to the group. Some of us were able to try them out! – Ethan

I liked P.E because Dee Dee and I were able to show our game about moving and competing. – Tessa

I helped by writing down the times for P.E – Rylee

Ski Trip

Last week, some of P6/7 went on a residential ski trip for two nights. We are working on personal writing so a blog post will be coming soon! Here are some of our photos in anticipation 🙂

Friday Update

This week we have been very busy in class! Here are some of our magic moments 🙂

Morning Starters

I have enjoyed coming into class and having morning starters to work in. It kind of gets you started on the day especially if it links to maths. – Suzie

I like how it gets you prepared for the whole day – Dee Dee

I like it as we have to make our sentences ambitious and we can write about our weekends and things we get up to out of school – Alice

My favourite is the word challenge where you have to make as many words out of the letters you have been given – Eilidh

P.E – Team Building

We had to work in partners to talk and create our own team games. Miss Crawford discussed the games with us and if we had to make any changes we did so. I liked thinking about making up our own games – Regan

I liked Spyre game with Miss McNally where you had to move from one end of the hall to the other, using different movements, without getting caught by the Spyre! – Leo

It was fun getting to make our own games up and use the P.E equipment with each other – India

Art – Water colours

I liked doing the water colour landscapes as we got to go outside and choose which angle we wanted to sketch from. – Dee Dee

I enjoyed making our own designs during water colours – Alice

I liked using outdoors to make my painting as we got to take a landscape from the outdoors. – India

I enjoyed being outside when it was sunny and sketching what we could see. I liked being able to do a 1st Draft and 2nd Draft of my work. – Johnny

French

I liked working through my French book this week as it taught us more about French and the spellings – Tessa

I liked designing our front covers on the French Booklet – India

Library Time

This week we went and used our school library a few times. We were able to read our own choice book, listen to Mrs McLaughlin reading and audio books. – Eilidh

I enjoyed listening to Mrs McLaughlin talk about the motorbikes – Johnny

Music

I enjoyed doing music with Mrs Young on my clarinet. I was practising a song that I might be playing at the easter service – Tyler

Scottish Book Trust Trailer

This is our book trailer of Ravenstorm Island by Gillian Philip. This book is a shortlisted book for the Scottish Book Trust this year and we read it in class as our class novel.

We split the class into Directors, Actors and Prop managers. First we planned out how we were going to carry out the trailer using a storyboard template. The Directors found this useful when it came to filming!

The planning, filming and editing process took us about two weeks to complete. The scenery you will see is from our local school environment and the Directors enjoyed filming outside. We felt it was important to capture Kenmore and Scotland in the trailer.

We hope you like our trailer. Please leave comments and feedback as this will allow us to improve our next trailers!

Watch and beware, you are in for a scare!

Science – Dissolving

Science – Exploring Dissolving

P5-7 have enjoyed exploring the scientific process of dissolving this week in our co-operative groups. As a team, we discussed, designed and carried out our own dissolving experiments. Some materials we explored included coffee, salt, sugar, chalk, rice and chocolate powder! Our experiments allowed us to discover the impact that stirring, volume of water, temperature of water and weight of the solute had on the speed of dissolving. We used the class i-pads as timers to ensure accurate results and compared our predictions to our actual results.

We evaluated each others experiments to ensure that each designed experiment was fair and we enjoyed discussing the outcome of each experiment.

During our experiments we began to discuss the process of separation and filtration. Our next Science lesson will focus on these topics.

We enjoyed trying out the safety goggles!
