Shoals of Fish at Papay School

(Another blog from the children. This week, describing our exciting Monday morning working with the excellent Chris Rutterford and his team. We’re delighted with the bright new addition to the front of school.)

On Monday 23rd of August 2021, we worked with a local artist to spray paint fish across the nursery playground. The outcome is very pleasing as you can see in the pictures. Everybody who has walked past has left a nice comment.

The way we painted each fish was:

  1. Apply a base coat of white paint for the fish’s outline.
  2. Choose the spray paint colour you want for the body of the fish.
  3. Line up the stencil with the fish.
  4. Spray the base colour of the fish.
  5. Get the second stencil (with the detail) and slot it in to the other stencil.
  6. Spray the colour you want for the gills, eyes and nose.
  7. Reveal the fish and marvel at your genius.

One of the nicest aspects of painting the fish was that it has made the nursery playground a lot brighter. It makes Mr Ross happy every morning. It also tells you where to go:

  • For the nursery – follow the small fish
  • For the school – follow the big fish

We have to give a special massive thank you to Chris Rutterford for helping us to paint the fish. Chris helped with every aspect of the project: the idea, the design, the materials, the stencils, and he actually painted the fish. Thank you, Chris!

It was lovely to work on something that included most of the school community. We had parents, pupils, and almost all staff, including our cook. No one but Chris had ever done something like this before. The new mural has brightened up the school a lot and we hope we can do something like this again soon.
