This weeks assembly is linked to Holocaust Memorial Day is for everyone. Each year, across the UK, thousands of people come together to learn more about the past and take action to create a safer future. The theme for 2022 is One Day. We thought about the importance of remembering what has happened so we don’t let it happen again.

Article 2 – The Convention applies to every child without discrimination

Article 19 – Protection from violence, abuse and neglect

Article 37– No child should be tortured, sentenced to death, imprisoned unfairly or treated in a cruel or inhuman way

Article 38– No child under 15 should join the army and children should be protected in war

Today in assembly we discussed what factors help to shape someone’s identity and sense of self.

Article 7 – birth registration, name, nationality, care. Every child has the right to be registered at birth, to have a name and nationality, and, as far as possible, to know and be cared for by their parents.

Article 8 – protection and preservation of Identity

Every child has the right to an identity. Governments must respect and protect that right, and prevent the child’s name, nationality or family relationships from being changed unlawfully.

Today’s assembly is the first after New Year and Christmas.  We discussed how people use this time of year to make a promise to improve or make a change. We looked at the Promise made by the UNCRC and looked at the importance of Education in keeping that promise to children and young people.

Article 29 – Your education should help you use and develop your talents and abilities. It should also help you learn to live peacefully, protect the environment and respect other people.

Today in assembly the boys and girls explored Human Rights Day.  We discussed how rights and access to rights impact on all of humanity.

Article 4 (implementation of the Convention) – Governments must do all they can to make sure every child can enjoy their rights by creating systems and passing laws that promote and protect children’s rights.

Article 41 (respect for higher national standards) – If a country has laws and standards that go further than the present Convention, then the country must keep these laws

Todays assembly is to share information and learn more about what can be done to support people with disabilities. We learned that there is a charter to help protect and look after people with disabilities and that not all disabilities can be seen.

Article 23 – Children with disabilities: A child with a disability has the right to live a full and decent life with dignity and, as far as possible, independence and play an active part in the community.  Governments must do all they can to support disabled children and their families.

This week’s assembly looked at National Children’s Day. We explored the reasons behind the need to have a charter for children’s rights and the role adults play in making sure children realise their rights.

This week’s assembly focuses on Anti-Bullying week. We looked at what bullying is and what we can do in certain situations to ‘bully proof’ our school.

Article 12 – Respect for the views of the child: Every child has the right to express their views, feelings and wishes in all matters affecting them, and to have their views considered and taken seriously. This right applies at all times, for example during immigration proceedings, housing decisions or the child’s day-to-day home life.

Article 19 – Protection from violence, abuse and neglect: Governments must do all they can to ensure that children are protected from all forms of violence, abuse, neglect and bad treatment by their parents or anyone else who looks after them.

Today at assembly we looked at Remembrance Day and how it has impacted on the rights children have today.

Article 38 – War and Armed Conflicts – Governments must not allow children under the age of 15 to take part in war or join the armed forces. Governments must do everything they can to protect and care for children affected by war and armed conflicts

Today we earned about the things we need to thrive and survive. We shared our opinions on what things are important to help us live a full and happy life.

Article 26 – Children have the right to help from the government if you are poor or in need.

Article 27 – Children have the right to food, clothing, a safe place to live and to have your basic needs met. You should not be disadvantaged so that you can’t do many of the things other kids can do.

Our potential Primary 6 JRSOs had to attend an interview with our current P7 JRSOs. They had to answer questions on their skills and qualities. Good luck everyone!
