Information – True or False

Todays assembly focuses on Article 17 – a child’s right to information that benefits them. We looked at fake news and safe sources to get information from.

Article 17 (access to information from the media): Every child has the right to reliable information from a variety of sources, and governments should encourage the media to provide information that children can understand. Governments must help protect children from materials that could harm them.

Earth Day Article 6 and 24

Todays assembly is build around Earth Day. We focused on what actions we can take to help protect the planet.

Article 6 (life, survival and development): Every child has the right to life. Governments must do all they can to ensure that children survive and develop to their full potential.

Article 24 (health and health services): Every child has the right to the best possible health. Governments must provide good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food, and a clean environment and education on health and well-being so that children can stay healthy. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this

World Water Day Article 24 and 27

This week’s assembly looks at World Water Day – it’s important to remember that 2 billion people across the world do not have access to safe water. We discussed the importance of water and how it is used.

Article 24 (health and health services): Every child has the right to the best possible health. Article 27 (adequate standard of living): Every child has the right to a standard of living that is good enough to meet their physical and social needs and support their development. Governments must help families who cannot afford to provide this.

 

International Woman’s Day Article 2,12 and 13

This week we focused on international Woman’s week. We considered how important it is to ensure we have gender equality in all areas of society.

Article 2 (non-discrimination): The Convention applies to every child without discrimination, whatever their ethnicity, gender, religion, language, abilities or any other status, whatever they think or say, whatever their family background.

Article 12 (respect for the views of the child): Every child has the right to express their views, feelings and wishes in all matters affecting them, and to have their views considered and taken seriously. This right applies at all times, for example during immigration proceedings, housing decisions or the child’s day-to-day home life.

Article 13 (freedom of expression): Every child must be free to express their thoughts and opinions and to access all kinds of information, as long as it is within the law.

World Book Day Article 17, 26 and 31

Today is World Book Day. We discussed the importance of books and how they influence and impact on our lives. Are books as important now we have the internet?

We finished our assembly with a Fairtrade Fortnight quiz.

Article 29 – (goals of education): Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures and the environment.

Article 31 – (leisure, play and culture): Every child has the right to relax, play and take part in a wide range of cultural and artistic activities.

Fairtrade Fortnight

This week is the start of Fairtrade Fortnight. Our primary 6/7 and primary 7 classes are running a tuckshop and the rest of the school. We are learning all about the purpose and benefits of buying Fairtrade.

At today’s assembly we looked at the impact of choices and that the choices we make can have a positive or negative impact on others.

Article 17 – Access to Information Children have the right to get information from the Internet, radio, television, newspapers, books and other sources. Adults should make sure the information they are getting is not harmful. Governments should encourage the media to share information from lots of different sources, in languages that all children can understand.

Article 26 – Social and Economic Help Governments should provide money or other support to help children from poor families.

Article 32 – Protection from harmful work Children have the right to be protected from doing work that is dangerous or bad for their education, health or development. If children work, they have the right to be safe and paid fairly.

Children’s Mental Health Week

This week is Children’s Mental Health Week.  Click on the image below to access some of the resources to help promote positive wellbeing.

This week we also explored Safer Internet Day – we considered what we can do to make ourselves and others safer online. Making sure we treat others with respect and protect our privacy too.

Article 19 (protection from violence, abuse and neglect): Governments must do all they can to ensure that children are protected from all forms of violence, abuse, neglect and bad treatment by their parents or anyone else who looks after them

Article 31 (leisure, play and culture): Every child has the right to relax, play and take part in a wide range of cultural and artistic activities

Knowledge of Rights Article 42

Todays assembly highlights the responsibility of governments to ensure children are aware of their rights. We explored what adults need to do to make this happen!

Governments must actively work to make sure children and adults know about the Convention.
