The expressive arts include experiences and outcomes in art and design, drama, dance and music.
Through the expressive arts, children and young people can have rich opportunities to be creative and imaginative and to experience inspiration and enjoyment.
They can come to understand the important roles of the arts in describing and changing society.
Through their experience of the expressive arts, children and young people can appreciate the contributions of the arts in the lives of individuals and communities.
Learning through the expressive arts enables children and young people to:
- express themselves in different ways and be creative
- experience enjoyment (and contribute to other people’s enjoyment) through creative and expressive performance and presentation
- develop important skills specific to expressive arts and also transferable skills
- develop an appreciation of aesthetic and cultural values and ideas
- for some, prepare for advanced learning and future careers by building foundations for excellence in the expressive arts.
Expressive Arts in St. Timothy’s
Music, Drama and Art & Design play an important part in the child’s development and are daily features in St. Timothy’s.
Art
Art and Design Guidelines are followed throughout the school and afford the opportunity for the children to experience the use of a wide variety of materials and to develop a range of techniques.
These include the systematic study of colour, line, form pattern, shape and texture and craft skills such as puppetry, model making, collage, printing and needlework.
Music
Pupils are encouraged to play simple musical instruments, read simple notation, compose their own tunes, enjoy singing, listen to a variety of music and hopefully acquire an interest in the subject which may develop as they grow older. Silver Burdett music programme is used throughout the school. Radio and television programmes are used to support musical activities.
Pr 5 classes are provided with 1 hour choral work each alternate week by a North Lanarkshire Tutor. Instrumental tuition (brass & woodwind) is available to Pr 6 & Pr 7 pupils who wish to participate.
Drama
Drama provides excellent opportunities for group work based on pupil interaction. Each class covers the drama programme through topic work, purposeful play and performances for other classes and/or audiences.
