Primary 6 News

Primary 6 are enjoying their new topic Titanic ‘the Unsinkable Ship.’ They are fascinated by the luxury liner and have so far worked co-operatively in pairs and trios to gather information and write notes. They have also written newspaper reports about the launch of the ship too.

In maths this term primary 6 will be looking at measuring, estimating and drawing lengths. They will measure various objects using a ruler, metre stick and trundle wheel. In literacy they are reading various novels in their groups and are also learning about a selection of poetic forms and techniques. This will help them to write a poem inspired by their dreams for an upcoming writing competition. Our focus this week is similes and metaphors.

In health and wellbeing, the children are enjoying a 4-week football coaching session while learning about recycling and what they can do to reduce their carbon footprint. This Thursday the children will attend Taylor High School and will be involved in a variety of different sporting activities. We will be walking there and back so hopefully it doesn’t rain. 🙂

Primary 6 are also looking forward to more opportunities to work with their primary one buddies. They will participate in guided reading sessions with their buddies, either at the library or in class. They will also work together to complete art work linked to Robert Burns this week too.

We are all looking forward to an interesting term.

Work Experience Students

Last week the pupils in P1 and P2 were given some extra help with their lessons by two work experience students from Taylor High School. The girls said they enjoyed their week at school and I know the children and the staff found them to be very helpful and hardworking. Thank you girls and hope to see you again.

Citizenship

Primary 7 are glad to be back at school after the Christmas break.  We are looking forward to a very busy term ahead.

In February we will visit Kilbowie Outdoor Residential Centre in Oban.  We are extremely excited about this.  Some activities that we are looking forward to are Gorge Walking, Coasteering, Skiing, Mountain Biking, Hill Walking, Safari and Kayaking.   We can’t wait to participate in all the fun activities and we look forward to sharing our stories and experiences.

This term we will look at Citizenship for our topic.  We aim to be good citizens and to be the best we can be.  We will look at children’s rights and responsibilities and we will research a variety of influential people.  In Health and Wellbeing we will look at the importance of making right choices and also leading a healthy lifestyle.

We look forward to the challenges ahead!

A Busy Term

Primary 1 are looking forward to a very busy term.

We have already started learning about life ‘Under the Sea’ and will move on to learning about ‘People Who Help Us’ in March. We get lots of visitors for this topic and it would be great if any parents would like to drop in for 5 minutes one afternoon (date to follow) to tell us about their interesting job and how it helps us!

In literacy we are learning all about phonemes and we are having great fun being phoneme detectives.

In numeracy lessons we are learning how to add and subtract and we are helping each other by talking about different strategies we use to get the answers.

I can’t wait to see all the mini aquariums the children are making…they are all very excited to show them off!

New Term in Primary 5

Primary 5 have been very busy since coming back to school. They have started a new novel, Emily’s Surprising Voyage which tracks Emily’s journey from Liverpool to Australia back in the Victorian times. This fits in very well with their new topic comparing life in Australia with life in Scotland and their Assembly on The Victorians which is on 27th February. They have also been looking at the works of Scottish artist Jolomo and exploring his use of colour in their own work.

Children’s Wellbeing Survey

All schools in North Lanarkshire have been asked to participate in a Health and Wellbeing survey with P5 to P7 pupils. The survey is called the Children’s Wellbeing Survey. On Friday of this week, every pupil in P5 to P7 will be issued with a letter and information sheet. Parents have 10 days to complete and return the opt out sheet which is contained within the letter, if you do not wish your child to participate in this research.

The survey will begin in school from 30th January.

The survey is anonymous and we are assured that the results of the survey will be used to understand the wellbeing needs of children and help staff to improve services in the area.

Please check your child’s bag on Friday and pass this information on to friends and family.
