The Music Department is part of the Faculty of Technical and Creative Industries.

Welcome to the Music Department – the nosiest department in school!

St Maurice’s Music department offers opportunities for all our young people to develop their musicality and creativity. We offer additional musical opportunities through group lessons with our specialist instructors and extra-curricular experiences such as choirs, bands and groups.  

Pupils are encouraged to join one of the many ensembles that run in the department throughout the week: 

  • Junior Rock Band (Friday – 12.30pm – 1.15pm) 
  • Woodwind Ensemble (Thursday – 12.50pm – 1.15pm) 
  • Guitar Group (Friday – 12.30pm – 1.15) 
  • Choir (Monday – 12.50pm – 1.15pm) 
  • Music Ministry

Through our BGE and Senior Phase Curriculum, pupils develop their performing, listening and composing skills through a variety of activities from learning to play instruments; solo and group performing; and composing their own music using a range of technology.

BGE 

Throughout BGE, pupils will be given the opportunity to learn different instruments and develop their practical skills through rotations on Keyboard, Tuned Percussion, Ukulele and Drumkit, alongside group performance. Pupils will also develop their Understanding, Music Theory and Listening skills, learning about different genres of Music, learning about the social and cultural influences of Music from different countries, instruments and styles. Composing skills are developed in a variety of topics and using different technology such as Sibelius, Audacity and One Motion chord generator. 

National 3, 4 & 5 Music 

The National 3, 4 and 5 Music courses offer pupils a variety of opportunities to develop their Performing, Understanding and Composing skills. Throughout the course, pupils will prepare a performance repertoire for 2 instruments. Pupils will learn about different genres of Music as well as developing their understanding of Music Theory. Pupils will also compose a piece of Music. 

Higher Music 

The Higher Course offers pupils a variety of opportunities to continue developing their Performing, Understanding and Composing skills. Throughout the course, pupils will prepare a programme of music for 2 instruments that lasts for 12 minutes. Pupils will continue to learn about different genres of Music as well as develop their Music Theory. Pupils will also gain composing experience, writing a piece of music that lasts between 1 and 3 ½ minutes long. 

Advanced Higher Music 

The Advanced Higher Course offers pupils a variety of opportunities to continue developing their Performing, Understanding and Composing skills. Throughout the course, pupils will prepare a programme of Music for 2 instruments that lasts for 18-20 minutes. Pupils will continue to learn about different genres of music as well as developing their Music Theory. Pupils will also gain more composing experience and analyse a piece or excerpt of music.
