In S1, S2 and S3 all pupils will attend maths for four periods every week. They will also experience numeracy in all other subjects across the curriculum.
Pupils follow a Broad General Education from S1 to S3 and will cover topics in Number/Money/Measure, Shape/Position/Movement and Information Handling in line with Learning Outcomes and Experiences from Curriculum for Excellence. This should enable pupils to:
- develop a secure understanding of the concepts, principles and processes of mathematics and apply these in different contexts.
- engage with more abstract mathematical concepts and develop new kinds of thinking
- understand the application of mathematics and its impact on society past and present
- develop essential numeracy skills to allow full participation in society
- establish firm foundations for further specialist learning
- become financially aware and effective money managers
- interpret numerical information in order to draw conclusions, assess risk, make reasoned evaluations and informed decisions
- apply skills and understanding in order to solve problems within a variety of contexts
- appreciate that effective use of technologies can enhance the development of skills and concepts
This curriculum will then prepare pupils for appropriate National Qualification at National 3, National 4 or National 5 in S4.
