Maths – Broad General Education

In S1, S2 and S3 all pupils will attend maths for four periods every week. They will also experience numeracy in all other subjects across the curriculum.

Pupils follow a Broad General Education from S1 to S3 and will cover topics in Number/Money/Measure, Shape/Position/Movement and Information Handling in line with Learning Outcomes and Experiences from Curriculum for Excellence. This should enable pupils to:

  • develop a secure understanding of the concepts, principles and processes of mathematics and apply these in different contexts.
  • engage with more abstract mathematical concepts and develop new kinds of thinking
  • understand the application of mathematics and its impact on society past and present
  • develop essential numeracy skills to allow full participation in society
  • establish firm foundations for further specialist learning
  • become financially aware and effective money managers
  • interpret numerical information in order to draw conclusions, assess risk, make reasoned evaluations and informed decisions
  • apply skills and understanding in order to solve problems within a variety of contexts
  • appreciate that effective use of technologies can enhance the development of skills and concepts

This curriculum will then prepare pupils for appropriate National Qualification at National 3, National 4 or National 5 in S4.
