Graphic Communication is available at National 4, National 5 and Higher levels here in Saint Maurice’s. The course provides opportunities for candidates to initiate and develop their own ideas graphically. It allows them to develop skills in reading and interpreting graphics produced by others. Candidates continue to develop graphic awareness, often in complex graphic situations, expanding their visual literacy.
The course is practical, exploratory and experiential in nature. It combines elements of creativity and communicating for visual impact with elements of protocol and an appreciation of the importance of graphic communication standards.

Course Content
Pupils develop:
– skills in graphic communication techniques, including the use of equipment, graphic materials and software
– creativity in the production of graphic communications to produce visual impact in meeting a specified purpose
– skills in evaluating the effectiveness of graphics in communicating and meeting their purpose
– an understanding of graphic communication standards, protocols and conventions, where these apply
-an understanding of the impact of graphic communication technologies on our environment and society
SQA Course Assessment
National 4
All National 4 units are assessed internally for Graphic Communication. Pupils must produce a variety of 2D and 3D Graphics to the correct standard. This will involve manual drawing, 3D modelling and Desktop Publishing throughout. They must also complete an Added Value Unit. They will be assigned a brief with various graphic tasks and asked to complete this independently. Their knowledge and understanding will be assessed internally by the school.
National 5 and Higher
Pupils will complete a practical graphics assignment during class time which contributes 36% of their overall grade. This involves Preliminary, Production and Promotional graphics and requires manual drawing, 3D modelling and Desktop Publishing throughout. The other The other 64% is determined by a 90 mark exam style question paper which relates to theory covered throughout the course. Both of these will be assessed by the SQA.

Many students leave St Maurice’s and go on to Higher Education to further develop their knowledge in one of the Technical subjects and many take up apprenticeships.
