Pr. 1- 3 Literacy Assembly

As promised we have pictures that capture the Literacy Assembly that took place on Friday.  Parents were informed of the week long activities that took place across the school and also got a chance to listen to some authors and illustrators who shared their stories.  All budding authors of the future.  At the end of the assembly parents and grandparents got the opportunity to read the wonderful stories that were on display around the hall. A fabulous week!!

Primary 1 Amazing Authors

Primary 1 have been very busy in class working with their Pr.7 buddies to write and illustrate our own books.  They made a plan for their story with their buddy and designed their  own front cover, then they got to work writing their own stories.  They will soon be finished and ready to share with friends,  family and visitors.  As part of Literacy Fortnight the class also had some visitors who came along to read their favourite stories.  This included Mrs.Redmond, Mrs.Connolly and Mrs. Rankin.  In class Pr.1 have had lots of opportunity to listen to stories and will be logging onto Live Literature to hear some well known authors talk about their books.  The boys and girls are looking forward to World Book Day and their pyjama themed readathon and to the Literacy Assembly on Friday when they can dress up as a character from fiction.  Their big evidence books will have a record of all that they have been involved with to celebrate the world of books.

Outdoor Learning

Outdoor Learning Primary 1
Rooms 1 and 2 took advantage of the good weather and enjoyed some outdoor learning with their P7 buddies this week.
The children starte with some warm up exercises such as, body twists, star jumps and running from tree to tree.
It was then time to begin their outdoor learning challenge with their buddies.
The creative challenge was to collect objects around the garden such as, sticks, stones and leaves. Then they had to create pictures with these items.
The counting challenge was to count items around the school such as, windows bins and benches. The children had to put their estimatiing and guessing skills to work here especially when counting the windows.
The literacy challenge was to play I Spy. They found items like e – for empty bottle, b – for brick and f – for feather.
The physical challenge was to create their own game with some PE equipment such as, hoola hoops and bean bags.
Some great fun and great learning! Well done P1 and of course our P7 buddies.

Chefs at Work

Our new cooking kitchen is fully operational and already being put to great use.  The smell of bruschetta being made then cooked in the oven was absolutely mouth watering.  Mrs.Docherty has now made a request that she doesn’t get  left out when all this lovely cooking takes place.  Bruschette is her favourite!

Science at the Early Level

This week the children in room 1 and 2 investigated the best materials to keep us warm in winter.

The children were able to talk about and show materials that keep us warm such as, jumpers, boots, coats, hats, scarves and gloves.

They planned to try out 3 materials – felt (like fleecy jumpers and cosy pyjamas), cotton wool (like woolly jumpers and hats) and shiny material (like waterproof coats).

They covered 3 plastic bottles with the different materials and then poured in hot water and recorded their predictions.

The children enjoyed using the thermometers to record changes.

Finally they made their conclusions when the result showed the wool was the best material with the felt coming a close second.

Great science work children.

Paired Reading

Our Paired Reading Programme began on Tuesday afternoon and involves Pr.7 pupils taking on a leadership role through working with and supporting the progress of our Pr.1 pupils and their literacy skills.   Primary 7 pupils trained by Miss Ross and Mrs Chisholm had been waiting patiently to put their new skills into practice prior to the first session.  Both Miss Ross and Mrs Chisholm reported that they  were an absolute delight when they came down to visit the infant department. They were all extremely motivated and enthusiastic and spent time getting to know their reading buddies before getting down to the real business of reading and sharing good practice.  Pr.7 pupils took their role as mentor very seriously and Pr.1 pupils can’t wait until they return next week.   Well Done Pr7 !!!  Now we aim to extend the programme to our Pr.6 pupils who will aid our Pr.2 pupils.
