Financial Education at the Early Level

During Financial Education  Week, the boys and girls of Rooms 1 and 2 had a first look at money and how it is used in everyday life. They had in depth discussions about the importance of money and why money is  so important.  They used the  Greengrocers Shop to buy items costing 1p, up to a maximum of 10 items – 10p etc.  They also had a close look at other coins up to the value of £2 and used these coins to make money men pictures.  They used the smartboard to sort the coins into the correct jars.   Children worked co-operatively ensuringthat everyone had to  listen carefully to each other, said kind things, took turns and shared resources carefully.  So many learning opportunities within one focus.  Well done boys and girls!!

Health Committee News

The P1-3 HWB Committee opened up our new kitchen yesterday at our first meeting since the kitchen has been ready to use. We discussed health & safety and hygiene before we split inot two groups to begin our tasks. The first group made healthy cucumber and cheese wraps in the kitchen area and the other group designed ‘Welcome Posters’ to be displayed in and around our kitchen area. These posters are to advertise and promote our new kitchen.  We then swapped over so that both groups got to experience both activities.

The aim was to carry this message back to our teachers and peers in order to share this good news and encourage all classes to use our Healthy Kitchen area.  We ar very grateful to our PTA for working so hard to support the school and fund this great asset.  Our chairperson Adam, recorded the minutes of our meeting in our HWB Committee folder which is available on our display board.

Maths in a real life context

The wonderful children of Room 1 and 2 have been learning about weight and carried out a number of activities last week to help them develop an understanding of heavy and light and also the need to weigh in a real life context.  They baked cakes last week and had to weigh their ingredients before mixing and then baking in the oven.  Oh and they had a lovely time eating them too.  Later on in the week they also wrote instructions about how to bake a cake.  No excuse not to bake at home now as we have plenty of Mary Berrys and Paul Hollywoods (Great British Bake Off)!!

Santa’s Workshop

Primary 1 pupils have been extremely busy this week helping Santa  in his workshop.  Using their maths skills they have been busy wrapping presents from the workshop and has involved working co-operatively with each other.  They used navigational skills in technology directing the Bee Bot to the penguins in the North Pole.   In Literacy they have written lots of exciting Christmas sentences using their winter and Christmas word mat..  They are now beginning to use joining words to make their sentences more exciting and interesting.  They wrote invitations to the classmates inviting them to the Christmas Party.  After Christmas the very clever bunch in Pr.1 aim to plan their own winter Science investigations and will record their findings in their big evidence books.  They also look forward to learning about 2D and 3D shapes.  A busy time ahead for Pr.1.  Well done boys and girls.  Here is a picture gallery of the exciting work taking place in Pr.1.

They were collecting various woodland items such as; 5 pieces of bark, 4 daisies, 3 stones, 6 leaves etc. each team had a different card, with a different challenge. Children also participated in lots of woodland exercises to keep active and healthy! Have a look at their fab pics!

In the afternoon they worked with their P7 buddies to Build a hut for Percy, some children did a Bug Hunt, and others dug up the vegetables in the garden so that they can begin to plant their winter vegetables next week!
