Enabling environments outdoors

We are so grateful to have received a wonderful gift, carefully crafted by Scott, Nicola’s husband, who under her direct guidance spent the summer creating such a wonderful resource for our children.

All children have daily opportunities to choose to be curious and learn in the outdoor environment regardless of the weather. Take a moment when you arrive for their session and chat to your child asking whether or not hey intend to go directly outdoors. If they do there is no need to change their footwear. Please check to make sure they have a full set of dry clothing in their bags, especially socks and trousers which they can easily change into. All personal clothing should be clearly labelled, there are Sharpie pens available in the cloakroom if required.

Watch this space, follow us on TWITTER and most importantly talk to your child about their learning outdoors.

Rainbow Room meets The Gingerbread Man

The children from the Rainbow Room have been developing their emerging literacy skills through the story of “The Gingerbread Man”. They have created him from playdough, baked him in the oven and recreated the story from puppets and props. The children are able to re-tell parts of the story or carry out the actions to indicate the next part.

The children have also been developing their literacy skills using table top games ,such as dominoes, picture lotto and jigsaws. Where they are matching and sorting, and persevering with tasks.

Dear Zoo – Family Learning

A huge thank you to all the parents and carer’s who are continuing to attend our Family Learning Sessions. You supported us to bring a fantastic book to life “Dear Zoo”  for your little ones, by helping them choose the prop to match the narrative and provided the accompanying sounds! You then helped the children extend their learning by finding the various animals out in garden. While adding to their vocabulary and emergent literacy skills with descriptions of where to look for each animal.

Engaging in early literacy in the outdoor learning environment

The Rainbow Room enjoyed their first family session with Jen, Amanda today. We visited the large football park taking lots of balls, the parachute and a role poly pumpkin. During this time we concentrated on early literacy, communication and having lots and lots of fun whilst playing together

We used lots of descriptive words such as rolling, down, up, over, under, big splash, squidgy grass, muddy puddles, kick the ball and parachute.

The children particularly enjoyed jumping and dropping the pumpkin into the puddles, putting the balls on the parachute and running under it and especially rolling the pumpkin, balls and themselves up and down the big hill.

It was great to utilise the outdoor learning environment to support parental engagement whilst developing  children’s emerging literacy through play.  I wonder what’s in store for next week.

Curious twos

The children in the Rainbow Room curiosity skills are continuously being developed through the skilful interaction of the practitioners. The rainy weather has provided endless opportunities as they watch the flow, fill their buckets and splash as loudly as they can watching the bubbles form.

The weekly parent and child Forest School sessions have been a resounding success. On the recent visit they caught some tadpoles and are fascinated watching them shed their tails as they grow.

They have been searching for insects, beasties and bugs and were in awe when they set the butterflies free.

Over the next few weeks we shall be welcoming some new families and a few of the children from the early level playroom will be joining us for the summer holidays.

Learning outdoors

The children in the Rainbow Room have been utilising the outdoor learning environments to deepen their curiosity and creativity skills. From finding the creepiest of crawlies under the stones to watching the “wee” tadpoles with wonder in the dipping pond within Shotts Nature Park and then wow they found the real Humpty Dumpty’s wall.

They have been learning how to care for their strawberry patch by ensuring that the plants are given water daily, before setting off into the mud kitchen to create some wonderful new recepies.

The children are demonstrating increasing skill on the balance bikes and are choosing daily to access this resource. Watch out for the next post to see their first Play on Pedals Family Learning session.

The new children have all settled well within the Rainbow Room and are beginning to build positive relationships with their peers. They have been having lots of fun both indoors and outdoors learning how to wait their turn as they explore the changes in weather. Lots of water play, splashing in puddles, jumping in the snow, and listening to the many sounds within the natural environment.

The Children in the Rainbow Room have been exploring the wonders of the world, looking up at the sky watching the clouds float by, seeking out spiders in their webs, they have been enjoying collecting stones and leaves and building with the natural resources that are in the outdoor environment.

They children have been exploring lots of sensory experiences where they have been observant and curious of the different textures that have been on offer.
