P7’s Sporty Raffle

Every year, our Parent Council donate £200 to our P7 pupils as part of an annual enterprise project.

Our P7s are then charged with coming up with an idea for how to make that money grow. The profits they make fund an end-of-year treat, which the children choose themselves.

This year, the P7 pupils from Mr Flanigan and Miss Duncan’s classes decided to hold a sporty raffle. £1 buys five tickets, with the lucky winner winning the wonderful prize shown below:

In addition to the raffle, our P7 pupils are also making delicious fruit sundaes which are being sold as a healthy snack option for pupils throughout the school. Fruit sundaes cost 70p.

Watervole Wetland Development

P7 have enjoyed visiting Brownsburn Local Nature Reserve as part of their Outdoor Learning this year. Yesterday, the class were joined by park ranger Kirsty Mooney, to make an important trip to the park.

Did you know that there are European Water Vole living just behind our school? Our responsible citizens have been playing their part in developing the environment to ensure the survival of this endangered species. The pupils achieved this through planting particular types of plant around the wetland area – these plants will help encourage the water voles to the area. They must be delicious!

As you can see from our gallery, it was tough work!

Airdrie Schools Cup

Yesterday, some of our P7 boys took part in the Airdrie Schools Cup football event, organised by Active Schools.

Our children enjoyed the experience, with every member of the squad getting plenty of game time! Following the event, medals were presented by some of the Airdrieonians football players – with one member of our team being particularly star-struck!

Look out for more about the event in the Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser.

P7 Outdoor Learning

As part of their topic on Scotland, P7 will be getting out into the great Scottish outdoors over the coming weeks, enjoying the Scottish weather and taking in the scenery.

This afternoon, the class worked in groups to create sun shelters using a limited selection of materials. Mr Innes was extremely impressed with the way the pupils collaborated and assigned roles to one another. Later in the term, the class will be building on this knowledge when they create ‘wild shelters’ in Brownsburn Local Nature Reserve – our favourite destination for outdoor learning!

Over the next four Tuesdays, our children will also be hiking, recording signs of animal life, and identifying and classifying insects and mini-beasts.

Well done Emma!

img_3331

We would like to say a huge congratulations to Emma, who was awarded a Highly Commended certificate for her entry into the North Lanarkshire Council Road Safety Calendar Competition.

The competition has been running for over twenty years, with literally thousands of pupils taking part each year; meaning that picking up an award is an extra special achievement!

We are very proud of you Emma…great job!

Sparks Inside Of Me

On Wednesday, P7 presented a terrific assembly, all about Electricity.  The children have been studying the history of electricity in class with Miss Duncan, as well as taking part in several electricity based scientific experiments.

The assembly kicked off with a chilling rendition of a West End Musical hit before the pupils taught us all about what they have learned.  The performance was eventually taken over by an eco-activist, who demanded that we think more carefully about the rate at which we use electricity.

“Enough is enough!  Save our planet!  Enough is enough! Save our Planet!”

As ever, our pupils made us very proud of them through the way they presented the immense amount of learning that has been taking place in their class.  We all really enjoyed it boys and girls.  Congratulations to the class and to Miss Duncan on a job well done!

Real-life Learning

Several of our classes have been learning about Mapping and Coordinates during Numeracy and Maths lessons this term.  P7 have extended their map reading skills  by taking part in orienteering sessions around the school grounds.

The class have enjoyed their lessons so far and have clearly been able to see how what they learn in class can be useful in the real world!

A Guard Of Honour

Today we said a very fond farewell to our Primary 7 class of 2016.

The pupils from the school lined the playground and clapped along with the pipers (some magnificent Airdrie Academy pupils).  Our P7s looked happy but emotional, wearing their ‘Leavers’ T-shirts’ which were bought for them by our fantastic Parent Council, who also did a marvellous job of organising our pipers.

It is always emotional saying goodbye, and everyone at the school would like to pay tribute to a terrific group of young adults, from a class we will never forget.

Reach for the stars boys and girls.  We cannot wait to find out what the future holds for you, and never forget…

Wherever you go, whatever you do, you will forever be part of the Rochsolloch Family.  We will miss each and every one of you.

Leavers’ Party 2016

On Tuesday night, our P7 pupils got together with their friends at All Saints for our annual Leavers’ Party!

The children had a blast, enjoying party games and snacks before dancing the night away together.

You have been a fantastic class, P7, and we will miss you very much.  All the best for the future!

A Day in the Capital

June is one of the busiest months in the calendar for our oldest pupils, and as part of their ‘Rights of the Child’ topic, P7 visited the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood today.

After a guided tour and interactive workshop, the class took part in a spot of impromptu hillwalking on Arthur’s Seat, making the most of Scotland’s now-famous beautiful summer weather.

Wear Yellow Walk

As you can tell, June is a really busy month at Rochsolloch Primary School!  Today our P7 pupils were representing the school at the annual Wear Yellow Walk at Strathclyde Park.

The children collected sponsor money for St. Andrew’s Hospice ahead of taking part in the walk today.  St Andrew’s Hospice employees have visited our school regularly in recent years, where the children have learned about the cost involved in providing the fantastic care offered to residents of Airdrie and neighbouring areas.

The class had a wonderful time in the incredible weather, retuning to school this afternoon proud and exhausted in equal measure!

Fantastic job P7.

Fun Football Festival

Recently, pupils from P6 and P7 took part in a Fun Football Festival at New Broomfield Stadium.  The children thoroughly enjoyed their day, playing great football and scoring plenty of goals along the way.

The sun even stayed out all day for them…what are the chances!?

Take a look at the pictures of Team Rochsolloch holding their participation medals.

World Book Day

We always enjoy celebrating World Book Day at Rochsolloch Primary School.  This year, our pupils were given the chance to rotate round three activities, with three different teachers over the course of the day.  The pupils were involved in a host of different book themed activities where they were challenged to read, write, talk, listen, make and do.  The gallery shows some of our P4-7 pupils working with Mr Flanigan.  The children used Roald Dahl’s ‘The Witches’ as their inspiration as they tried to become witch experts.  the experts were then interviewed for the evening news!
