The Sleepy Shepherd

This morning, our P1 children put on a fantastic Nativity performance of The Sleepy Shepherd, supported by their friends in P2 and P3!

Our gym hall was packed full and our little stars did not disappoint, as they acted, sang and danced beautifully, following a month of hard work and rehearsals!

Following an excellent re-telling of the traditional Christmas story from the point of view of one of the shepherds, our P2 and P3 children took to the stage to perform a selection of Christmas crackers, before all of our P1-P3 children joined together for the finale!

We’d like to congratulate our wonderful pupils for being the stars of the show, and thank our magnificent staff team and parent helpers for putting on such a wonderful performance for everyone.

We can’t wait to see it again tonight!

Humph the Camel!

Over the past couple of months, our P1-P3 children and teachers have been working round the clock to prepare a wonderful Christmas show – Humph the Camel! Having performed a dress-rehearsal for school pupils yesterday, our little stars took to the stage to put on a fantastic showcase of acting, singing and dancing for parents and friends this morning.

The show was a huge success and our children and staff are looking forward to taking to the stage again at 6.30pm tonight for their evening performance! The morning performance was wonderful, and we are so proud of our Rochsolloch family today.

Our show has been filmed this year, and DVDs can be purchased from the school, at a cost of £5.  DVDs will be ready in early January.

Our resident photographer, Mrs Cochrane, has taken these terrific snaps!

P2/3 Out and About

P2/3 made the most of the beautiful autumn weather today by taking a trip to Brownsburn Local Nature Reserve as part of their Katy Morag topic.

Many of our classes will be visiting the park in the coming weeks – the beginning of autumn is such a great time to get into the outdoor environment as there is just so much to see!

P2/3 Sound Energy Assembly

This morning, the pupils from P2/3 and Mrs Hill presented an excellent assembly all about Sound Energy.

The children shared a wealth of knowledge about sound, including: how sound is created through vibrations, Morse Code, and how our ears help us with balance as well as hearing.

We also got to see how the children have developed their musical skills during their topic through excellent demonstrations of glockenspiel playing and drumming.

We really enjoyed the performance P2/3, and the feedback from your audience was first class!

Great job children; great job Mrs Hill!

P2/3 Riverside Museum Outing

As part of their ‘Travel and Transport’ class IDL topic, P2/3 headed into Glasgow yesterday to visit the Riverside Museum.

During the day, the children had the opportunity to become scientists, engineers, designers, and even inventors, as they looked and travel through the ages!

Mrs Hill received several compliments from members of the public about the outstanding behaviour of the boys and girls in the class – just what we like to hear P2/3!

Thank you to our parent helpers who helped ensure our children had a wonderful day out, enriching their learning in the process!

Hands-On Learning in P2/3

At Rochsolloch Primary, we pride ourselves on bringing learning to life for our children. Our staff work hard to set learning in real life contexts, and to provide meaningful and engaging experiences for our pupils.

Take a look at some of the wonderful work that has been going on in P2/3 over the past couple of weeks!  In the gallery you can see the children baking Christmas cakes as part of an enterprise project, which has filled our infant wing with a sweet festive smell this week! You can also see the children working on their Sound Energy Interdisciplinary Learning topic: investigating sound caused by vibrations of air particles and experimenting with un-pitched percussion instruments.  Meanwhile, using pitched percussion, the children have also been learning to play Twinkle Twinkle and Jingle Bells on the Glockenspiel! Wow!

Fairtrade Fruity Fun in P2/3

As part of a learning journey set in Africa, P2/3 have been learning about Fairtrade produce through their ‘Handa’s Surprise’ topic.  As you can see from the gallery, the pupils have been making fruit kebabs with chocolate, after learning how and where cocoa is grown.

The class also wrote to Cadbury’s to ask them about their chocolate making process.

Special Visitors

Each month, we focus on one of the ‘SHANARRI Indicators.’  This month, we have focused on ‘SAFE’ and our pupils have been learning a lot in class and at Assembly about keeping safe.

During some Pupil Consultation, our children asked for a visit from our local fire service.  Mrs McCulloch organised this for our pupils and last week three terrific firefighters, Tony, Liz and Willie, came to speak to the whole school at Assembly, where they explained the finer details of their jobs, and also answered questions our classes had prepared for them.

The fire engine was parked in our school playground so that all of our pupils could have a closer look, with a few lucky classes getting a full tour!

We were delighted to welcome these special visitors to our school and Mrs McCulloch was over the moon to receive an e-mail from our visitors who praised our children’s behaviour and manners, while also saying that they were made to feel like celebrities while visiting RPS!

Thank you so much for paying us a visit…we’ll see you again soon!

A Roaring Great Topic!

On Thursday, P2/3 provided an incredible showcase of their topic learning by turning our dining hall into a dinosaur museum!  The boys and girls in the class have absolutely loved learning about dinosaurs this term, and their learning has stomped its way across the whole curriculum.

Parents and guests were able to enjoy being led around the museum by the on-site tour guides, and were given the opportunity to observe and take part in some of the following exhibits:

  • Fossil finder
  • Shadow puppets
  • Pin the Tail on the Dino
  • Gift shop
  • Dino Bite Café
  • Gallery
  • 3D egg display

Experiences like this bring learning to life for our pupils, and this is certainly a topic they will remember for many years to come.  On top of some wonderful learning, the pupils were able to raise a marvellous £114.76 for Glasgow Children’s Hospital through the sale of hand-made souvenirs in the Gift Shop.

Alliance Francaise!

Over the past three weeks, our P2 and P3 children have been taking part in ‘French Immersion’ lessons, courtesy of Alliance Francaise.  The pupils have been working with native French speakers, and have been learning how to use simple greetings, how to follow classroom instructions, how to count and sing and how to recognise colours, all in French!  It’s incredible how quickly the children are able to pick up the language, and these lessons have been a big hit with the pupils!  In the gallery you can see some of our children practising their speaking with their French sock puppets.  C’est excellente!
