IDL – Water Topic – Lesson 4…

Before we begin this weeks learning…

Last week I set a challenge of creating a working water filter that could turn muddy water into clean useable water…

Daniel and Declan both took on that challenge and succeeded…

Well done boys!      ______________________________________________________________________________________

This week we will learn how precious water is and about aid agencies which help to provide clean water…

Here are some questions I would like you to consider first…

How can we protect our water supply? and What do you think it would be like to live without water?______________________________________________________________________________________

Use the Oxfam Website: https://oxfamblogs.org/education/water_for_all/water/gettingstarted.htm to work through the lesson.

As you work through the pages think about the following questions:

What problems do some people face? How can these problems be overcome? How can we help?

You could design posters to persuade others to conserve/preserve water…

Or you could find out how to become a water hero with National Geographic Kids here! ______________________________________________________________________________________

You can answer sets of questions either timed or untimed and the activities are ideal for a little mental math boost each day!  ________________________________________________________________________________________

Below you will find Mental Math Challenge Cards which give you lots of problems, which should be solved in your head – no calculators please!

Mental-Maths-Challenge-Cards ________________________________________________________________________________________

I have also set a class competition on Sumdog which runs from 9am today until 3pm on Friday – for completing this challenge you will receive 250 coins!

I will also be rewarding those at the end of the week who have spent the most time online and have the highest scores…

Good luck in these mental math challenges!

Writing Lesson – Recount…

For this week’s writing task I would like you to write a recount of a day, a week or a time during lockdown which has been special to you. This can be anything at all that you have enjoyed or a time you have felt happy during this difficult time.

A few examples could be;

  • A day you have particularly enjoyed home schooling and doing the tasks you were given
  • A time that you have done something fun with your family, playing games, movie night, pj day
  • A special clap for carers Thursday
  • Learning a new game, dance, challenge
  • A time that you have exercised, went a walk in local area
  • A zoom/FaceTime call that you have had

You can choose what you wish to write your recount about. Make sure you are able to explain in detail about what you did, who with, when and where and why you did these things.

Recount Writing (First Level) – Primary 4

Recount Writing (Second Level) – Primary 5

I look forward to reading your recounts!

Spelling – Silent Letters…

For spelling this week, I would like you to spend time reading and spelling words which have silent letters.

Remember – some letters in words do not make a sound, they are silent.

Silent letters are letters that you can’t hear when you say the word, but that are there when you write the word.

There are silent letters in some English words because over hundreds of years, we have changed how we pronounce these words, but have kept the spelling the same.

The spelling tells us how the word used to be pronounced.

For example: knight – in the past, people used to say the word with the k sounded out at the beginning! That would sound very strange to us today if we said ‘k-night’!

However, sometimes these rules act as a useful reminder when helping us to include the silent letter when spelling the words out!

Use this PowerPoint/PDF to remind you of the spelling rules silent letters follow…

You can also recap/learn more about Silent Letters at this BBC Bitesize link or using this BBC Teach Class Clip

Then practise the silent letter words below using your usual strategies!

Purple Group Spelling – Silent Letters

Blue Group Spelling – Silent Letters (w & b

A further challenge has been included below… Can you sort the words which has silent letters into the correct columns…

New Week…

Hello Primary 5/4!

I hope you had a nice long weekend away from learning and did the things you enjoy most!

I have posted new learning resources this week & I hope you find them enjoyable and interesting!

Over the weekend you may have heard lots about when lockdown may end and when you will return to school. One of the things I agreed with from watching and listening to Nicola Sturgeon was how fantastic you have all been during this time. It has been difficult for you not learning the way you normally would and to not be at school with your teacher and friends but you have been trying so hard! I know learning at home is tricky and it may not always be what you want to be doing but I am proud of you for still trying to engage with your learning and I am grateful for all the pictures and videos I receive showing me how hard you are working on the tasks I am setting.

Remember – every bit of learning you do is beneficial – it doesn’t need to be something I’ve set. These resources are here if you need them but if you want to carry out research on something that interests you, find a way to include learning outdoors, read books you enjoy or get creative with arts & crafts then go for it! You (and your parents!) are in charge of your learning just now!

Remember to keep sending me any pictures of things you complete or anything else that you are doing that you would like to share with me. Also, continue to keep in touch with myself and your classmates on Mail or through our Class Team!

Have a great week P5/4!

Kindness Challenge…

Last week I asked you to take on the ‘7 Day Kindness Challenge’…

Or to record some of the times you were kind to others and when others were kind to you in your kindness diary…

Charlie got in touch to let me know some of the kind things he had done for others…

“Hello Miss Girvan. I have been practising drawing in 3D – I have drawn this plant pot from the garden. I have added some insects I have seen in the garden and added a cactus, a sunflower and a rainbow. As I’m missing my Nanna & Grandad so much I have posted it to them for my ‘Act of Kindness’ today. My Nanna has put my drawing in her window to display it!”

“Hello Miss Girvan – today I have been building things outdoors in the sunshine! I decided to build a playhouse for my guinea pigs, Pineapple & Chomper! I used shoe boxes, tape and plastic bottles. They love it!! I made lots of doors and windows they could peek out and hide behind too! My guinea pigs jump and shake their fur when they are happy and they have been jumping all day! My act of kindness today was for my pets!”

Both of these were lovely things to do! Both great acts of kindness! Well done Charlie!    ______________________________________________________________________________________

I said that I would take on the challenge too and have kept a photo diary to share with you, showing the acts of kindness I have completed!

On Monday, I made Adam a cup of tea – I even remembered the biscuits!

On Tuesday, I sent my gran a card from all of the family to brighten her day!

On Wednesday, I donated £5 to the charity Social Bite who are helping feed vulnerable people during this time.

On Thursday, I baked Adam a lemon drizzle cake – it is his favourite and he had been working very hard from home so I thought it would help to cheer him up after a day of work.

I don’t live with my parents anymore but on Friday I did a chore that needed done and hoovered the carpets!

On Saturday, I video called my mum – she is missing seeing my brother and I so I thought this would make her happy!

And finally on Sunday, I was kind to myself and spent time reading my favourite Harry Potter book on my Kindle.

I liked doing this challenge P5/4 – I hope you did too!

Remember – kindness is an amazing quality to have! It doesn’t cost us anything to be kind to one another and it means more to others than we would think!

First Aid Skills…

Usually, at this time of year, we would be recapping our skills in First Aid.

We all understand what first aid is, have learnt some first aid skills and should feel able to help someone who needs first aid.

Use the following website to recap your learning of why first aid is important, why & how we give first aid to someone and spend some time learning and practising the 8 first aid skills.
