St. Andrew’s Hospice Challenges…

This week, Ladywell will host two challenges to raise funds for St. Andrew’s Hospice.

Did you know that St. Andrew’s Hospice need £88,000 per week to operate?

This is why we have taken on the challenge of supporting our local hospice by hosting a:

Wear Yellow Week and (oh no!) Soak the Teacher Challenge

We understand that not everyone will be in a position to donate at the moment, however, please know that St. Andrew’s Hospice, the patients and their families appreciate all that you do, whether that is raising awareness through participating in a challenge or making a donation.

More information can be found on the following images…

We learned a lot about the Hospice earlier in the year during Hospice Care Week where we carried out research on St. Andrew’s Hospice and created information posters. Here are just a few of these…

Any donation, big or small, is greatly appreciated by St. Andrew’s Hospice – I am sure you will enjoy participating in both of these challenges and I look forward to seeing your pictures and videos! Remember when posting to Twitter to include the tag @LadywellPrimary @MissGirvan and @StAndrewsHospice. You can also share them with me via our class Team or by emailing me and I can share it to Twitter for you!

Remember to check Twitter on Friday where I am sure you will enjoy seeing myself and some of the other Ladywell teachers getting soaked!! Help!!!

Rainbow Learning – Week Six…

Last week, we focused on the colour yellow and we learnt about the sun.

Let’s revisit the story of Icarus and Daedalus – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVkwWo_LNZs or https://www.dltk-kids.com/world/greece/m-story-icarus.htm

birds

What do you think it would be like to be a bird and to be able to fly? What colours would your wings be, what type of bird would you be? Where would you live and where would you fly to?  Write about the adventures you would have and draw or paint a picture of your amazing creature! If you would like some help in drawing a bird, this clip might be helpful – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzxRWTv237M

How many birds of different types can you spot? Either from the window or when you are out for a walk, you could make a tally chart of the different types of birds in you area and the number that you see. Can you name the types of birds? These resources might help – https://www.rspb.org.uk/fun-and-learning/for-kids/games-and-activities/activities/  and https://www.rspb.org.uk/fun-and-learning/for-kids/facts-about-nature/facts-about-birds/

As an extension activity, perhaps you and your family could go out for a night-time walk to compare the different things they see flying – are they all birds or can you spot a bat or two?

You may want to make your own shadow puppets to re-tell the story of Icarus and Daedalus. To learn more about how to make shadow puppets, this clip might be helpful –  https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zbwv87h .

Or you may wish to use other objects such as wooden spoons to create the characters – https://www.ycom/watch?v=TL1fsqa52-k . Alternatively, you might want to act it out yourselves! You could record your performance and share it with me!

If you were inventors like Icarus and Daedalus, what would you make. You could send me some information about your invention; what it would do and what it would look like…

ice cream

Time for the Yellow Food Challenge.

Can you create a menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner of only yellow foods?

Remember it has to be healthy (well, custard lovers and vanilla ice cream fans could sneak in a little treat!)

And you have to be able to eat it too!

Maybe you could record your day on video or take pictures of the food you are eating.

Here’s how one family who only ate yellow for 24 hours got on – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqwDcAhDsjc

Don’t forget the birds – you could make them a yellow snack and see who comes for tea! https://www.rspb.org.uk/fun-and-learning/for-families/family-wild-challenge/activities/feed-the-birds/

IDL – Water Topic – Experiments…

This week, I would like you to have a go at some water experiments…

Just Add Water – Experiments

You can choose which one you would like to try, based on what you have at home, and how many you would like to try!

Lots more experiments can be found online on Google and Pinterest!

Just type ‘Simple Water Experiments for Children’

You may choose to try one you find online instead!

Please do not go and buy any items to complete your experiments – try to use items you already have or adapt to fit what you have in the house.

Remember to take photos or videos of your experiments and send them to me!

Miss Girvan.

P.S. With all the learning we have been doing on Rainbows you might like to give this one a go..

Maths – Chance & Uncertainty – WB. 1/6…

Hello P5/4,

These tasks should be worked on for the next few weeks – do not strive to complete them all this week.

Chance & Uncertainty or Probability is all about how likely something will happen. If something has a low probability then it is unlikely to happen, e.g. Miss Girvan becoming a mermaid! If something has a high probability it means that it is very likely to happen, e.g. tomorrow will be the 2nd of June.

You can learn more about Probability or Chance at the following link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zx9k7ty/articles/zqpxmnb

The first set of activities are for you P4s, as you are working on First Level, however, they are good revision for you too P5s before moving on to the next set of tasks below. Primary 4s if you would like to challenge your learning you can attempt the Second Level tasks too…

1. (First Level) – Chance and Uncertainty

2. (First Level) – Alphabet Chance

3. (First Level) – Certain or Impossible

4. (First Level) – Certain, Possible or Impossible

5. (First Level) – Probability

6. (First Level) – Chance Challenge

1. (Second Level) – Dice Roll Challenge

2. (Second Level) – Four Corners Game

3. (Second Level) – Spinners

4. (Second Level) – Chance Cards

5. (Second Level) – Marbles

Real life situation's example on PROBABILITY_________________________________________________________________

Remember to keep up your mental math practise on Sumdog – I will be rewarding those, again who at the end of the week, have spent the most time online and have the highest scores…

Good luck!

Here is a reminder of what Hieroglyphs are and how they were used…

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zg87xnb/articles/zvw3mfr

Then practise the Egyptian words below using your usual strategies!

What?! It’s June?!

Hello Primary 5/4,

I hope you have had a lovely weekend and had lots of fun in the sunshine!

I can’t believe that today is the 1st of June?!

I have posted new learning resources for this week along with information regarding whole school fundraising challenges for St. Andrew’s Hospice…

Continue to spend time with your families, playing outside and enjoying the sunshine this week! You could adapt your learning to take outdoors…

Orlagh had fun in the sun at the Motherwell Hub making bubbles…

Adam M found a creative way to practise his spelling last week with his sister whilst keeping cool…

Whilst in the swimming pool they were closing their eyes whilst the other guided them to the letters! I’m sure this made spelling much more enjoyable!

And Charlie took his reading outdoors & learnt more facts about the Ancient Egyptians!

Can you think of any other ways to take your learning outdoors this week…

Continue to keep in touch and send me pictures of what you are up to! I love seeing them!

Take care and stay safe!

“The Ickabog” by J.K. Rowling…

Good morning Primary 5/4,

I am very excited to let you know that J.K. Rowling has published a new story called, “The Ickabog”. She wrote it long ago, before Harry Potter, and it has been collecting dust in her attic.. until now!

The book will be available to read online for free for the next 7 weeks – with a few chapters being released at a time. She would also like for children to illustrate the story for her!

You can read the story or find out more about the illustrating competition by clicking the relevant picture below which will take you to the Ickabog website!

I can’t wait to read this new book too!

Happy reading!

Miss Girvan.

Rainbow Learning – Week Five…

This week we will recap on our learning of rainbows and the feelings of hope they have brought to everyone.

This week it surrounds the colour yellow, my favourite colour!

I like this colour because a lot of my favourite things are this colour – sunflowers, daisies & sunshine!

I also think it is a happy colour!

How does the colour yellow make you feel and why?

Yellow was one of Vincent Van Gogh’s favourite colours.

We learned about this famous artist earlier this year and his style of painting.

This clip can help with reminding you of that learning – https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z8sy4wx.

van gogh sunflower

You can have a look at Van Gogh’s paintings here https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=paintings+by+van+gogh&FORM=HDRSC3.

You might want to try to create your own copy of one of his masterpieces.

You can find a step by step guide to re-creating the ‘Sunflowers’, this drawing tutorial might be helpful in the initial drawing of your picture – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ__t656tnI and the following link – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYQDHgApivA – in looking at colour and texture.

Alternatively, you could make your own paintings in the impressionist style – remember to capture those sweeping brush strokes to show movement and vibrant colours! ________________________________________________________________________________________

The sun is also something we think about when we think of the colour yellow…

You can learn about the sun, earth and how shadows are made using these clips as a useful stimulus – https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zr32fg8https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zs4pr82https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z2gxvcw and https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z6df9j6.

You might like to explore shadows in more detail. Wait for a sunny day and then have some fun, recording the changes in the shape of your shadow throughout the day.  With some help, you can draw around the shadows and record the differences.  You might even want to get creative with some shadow art! Here are some ideas – https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=shadow+art+outdoor+steam+for+kids&qpvt=shadow+art+outdoor+steam+for+kids&FORM=IGRE

Why not use what you have learned about shadows to create your very own sundial? This might be outside, using stones and sticks, a portable one using paper plates or even making a human sundial!  This video clip might help with ideas of how this can be done – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeSexM-wVzA . When it’s ready, test it out – can you tell the time for a whole day only using your sundial (and not miss a meal)?! ________________________________________________________________________________________

You might want to finish off this weeks rainbow learning by listening to the story from Greek mythology – Icarus and Daedalus – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVkwWo_LNZs or you can read it from this text – https://www.dltk-kids.com/world/greece/m-story-icarus.htm

Miss Girvan.

How wonderful the colour yellow is. It stands for the sun ...
