Did you know?
A relic of St Valentine is kept in a church in Glasgow – a relic is the physical remains or possessions of a holy person. Relics were often bought and sold and collected by the people who could afford them. Beautiful caskets called reliquaries were made to hold the relics.

Literacy and language
So many people were illiterate in the past that artists used symbols to identify which saint was being portrayed. Sometimes the symbol reflects the way that the person was martyred, like St Catherine and her wheel. Sometimes it is associated with their responsibilities, like St Peter and his keys.
