Search engines

Google is the best known search engine in the world, but it doesn’t always supply the information you need.

Different search engines can provide different results, and may arrange their suggestions in a different order, so you often spot websites, videos or images on one search engine, but not on another.

Many search engines are also specific to particular areas of information. Try using some of the search engines below in your research.

Warning: just because something appears online does not make it accurate. you should always try to confirm your information with at least two other sources, or use a fact-checking website.

Academic search engines

Bing

Worth a try especially for video links, but also includes Ordnance Survey maps in its map search

DuckDuckGo

This search engine often comes up with different results to Google. Definitely worth trying.

Twitter

You don’t have to be a member of Twitter to read it, and it can work as a very useful search engine, especially to find opinions on different topics. Just don’t assume everything is accurate.

Slideshare

Slideshare shares presentations online so it can be a useful source of information. As always, be careful with accuracy and opinion.
