Free Comic Book Day – 7th May 2022

Free Comic Book Day will take place on May 7th this year. The idea is simple, you walk into a participating shop, ask them if they have any free comics available and hopefully walk out with your choices.
Not every shop selling comics and graphic novels is taking part so it’s worth checking the shop list at the address below. Make sure you look in the International List.

Climate Tales winners

Over the summer holidays I was one of the Librarian volunteer judges for the Climate Tales creative writing competition. Young people from across Scotland were invited to enter short stories, poetry, monologues or raps of 500 words or less focusing on the environment as part of the COP26 activities.

The winners have now been announced and can be viewed on the BBC Radio Scotland Climate Tales website. Sadly my winner didn’t make it but I still loved it, so hopefully they got into the final 45.

Royal Society Young Science Book Award

We’re delighted that Our Lady’s is again  involved in the judging for the Royal Society’s Young People’s Book Prize 2021.

The six books for this year are :

Picture of Young Science Book Award booksWe’re planning to involve as many of our 2nd year pupils as possible, judging the books through Art, Business Education and  of course, Science.  Art will review the design of the books, analysing the colours, fonts, illustrations, page layouts and the cover; Business Education (via ICT classes) will look at the whole idea of the book, who it would appeal to and who might choose to buy it; and Science classes will concentrate on how whether the text can be understood, how easily information can be found and any interesting ideas that jump out at them.

Along the way, we will be discussing the various tasks involved in the creation, production, marketing and selling of the books, encouraging pupils to identify potential careers of interest to them, not just in publishing, but also retailing and science.

The judging will take place later in the year and our final  collated results will be submitted to the Royal Society in January, providing our young people with a chance to share their thoughts and opinions.

Mouse and keyboard skills

Our S1 pupils are familiar with the laptops and tablets they use at primary school, all of which have trackpads or touchscreens. But the computers here at OLHS  all use mice, so our new arrivals need to lean to use the mouse pretty quickly. Over time, they’ll also improve their typing and will gain skills in a variety of computer software.

To help with the typing and mouse skills, we’ve put together a collection of games and activities that require improved accuracy in moving the mouse, drawing lines, and pointing and clicking.

The list has already been enthusiastically adopted by pupils in ICT and during lunchtimes in the Library and is helping pupils adapt to the technology.

Library books

As a result of Lockdown, all Library books will be reissued until after the Easter holidays

If you want to check what you have on loan, log in to the Library catalogue.

If you are returning books, please leave them in the Library box in your English class. You could

So for everyone that was concerned about overdues, no need to worry. Be happy!

And if you’re not sure of your Library code, you can ask the OLHS office (and they’ll contact me) or ask the English teachers.

World Book Day 2021

Today is World Book Day. The Librarian has purchased a special World Book Day book for every S1 pupil (which will be handed out once everyone is back in school), as well as the usual World Book Day £1 book token. The tokens can be used to buy a specially published £1 World Book Day book or as £1 discount token against a more expensive book.
However, because schools are still in Lockdown the World Book Day organisers have also created a digital token which can be downloaded here and printed.
If you would prefer a pre-printed token, please contact the school office and we will sort one for you next week.
The tokens are available to all pupils in the school and can be used until 28th March.
