Climate Tales winners
Over the summer holidays I was one of the Librarian volunteer judges for the Climate Tales creative writing competition. Young people from across Scotland were invited to enter short stories, poetry, monologues or raps of 500 words or less focusing on the environment as part of the COP26 activities.
The winners have now been announced and can be viewed on the BBC Radio Scotland Climate Tales website. Sadly my winner didn’t make it but I still loved it, so hopefully they got into the final 45.
Royal Society Young Science Book Award
We’re delighted that Our Lady’s is again involved in the judging for the Royal Society’s Young People’s Book Prize 2021.
The six books for this year are :
- 100 Things to Know About Saving the Planet
- Agent Asha: Mission Shark Bytes
- I Am a Book. I Am a Portal to the Universe.
- I Ate Sunshine for Breakfast
- Inventors
- Under the Stars
We’re planning to involve as many of our 2nd year pupils as possible, judging the books through Art, Business Education and of course, Science. Art will review the design of the books, analysing the colours, fonts, illustrations, page layouts and the cover; Business Education (via ICT classes) will look at the whole idea of the book, who it would appeal to and who might choose to buy it; and Science classes will concentrate on how whether the text can be understood, how easily information can be found and any interesting ideas that jump out at them.
Along the way, we will be discussing the various tasks involved in the creation, production, marketing and selling of the books, encouraging pupils to identify potential careers of interest to them, not just in publishing, but also retailing and science.
The judging will take place later in the year and our final collated results will be submitted to the Royal Society in January, providing our young people with a chance to share their thoughts and opinions.
