Primary 5 learners show exemplary behaviour

“Only in Cathedral Primary,” said Mr Young to himself as he walked past Primary 5a immediately after an inside lunch on Thursday 27th March. Despite Mrs Devaney having yet to return from the staffroom, our learners were already waiting quietly and ready to say their prayers. That’s the sort of exemplary behaviour that makes Cathedral such a special place to be!

Primary 7c join Cathedral GOMA

The latest artwork to appear in Cathedral GOMA (Gallery OMagnificent Art) online exhibition comes from Primary 7c.

Our Primary 7 learners used string to create a raised image before very carefully covering this with tin foil. Marker pens were then used to add the colour, completing the beautiful and striking Lenten images. Stunning!

Keep watching this space for more masterpieces from Cathedral’s talented artists.

Primary 2 learner constructs Spanish flag

This Primary 2 pupil had the opportunity for some learner-led learning on Wednesday 26th March. Inspired by the main modern language taught here in Cathedral, he headed to his learning street’s construction area and used the Duplo bricks to create the Spanish flag. Ingenious!

House Captains and Easter bunny surprise local residents

In response to a suggestion made during our recent round of Smart School Council meetings on how we can connect with our local community, our twelve House Captains and a giant Easter bunny hand-delivered invitations for our upcoming exhibition, along with a chocolate bunny, to local residents on Wednesday 26th March. There were lots of surprised (but delighted!) faces along Milton Street and we look forward to welcoming many of these local residents to Cathedral Primary on Wednesday 14th May when we host a special advance viewing of our 150th anniversary exhibition.

Digital family learning continues

Primary 3 parents and carers had the opportunity to join their child in class on Tuesday 25th March for a digital family learning workshop. Each of the three sessions opened with a presentation on how digital can support literacy and numeracy across the curriculum. Our Primary 3 learners then enjoyed using ‘Scratch Jnr’ on their ipad to do some coding with their parent/carer which involved creating moving characters. Very impressive computing skills!

Digital family learning sessions take place for our two Primary 4 classes on Tuesday 1st April. Times are as follows:

Primary 4a: 9.15 – 10.00am

Primary 4b: 11.00 – 11.45am

Primary 7 learner interviews Mr Young

This Primary 7 learner interviewed Mr Young on Monday 24th March for a very interesting (and historic) reason. Way back in 2000, the year Cathedral Primary celebrated its 125th anniversary, his mum was a Primary 7 pupil in Cathedral and interviewed a former Head Teacher for a special anniversary magazine. Twenty-five years down the line, we thought it would be a nice idea to do a similar interview and display the 2000 (mum) and 2025 (son) articles side by side in our 150th anniversary exhibition, which takes place in May.

Mr Young was asked lots of interesting questions during the interview including when and where he started teaching, what he enjoys most about being a Head Teacher and if he ever got the belt at school. You’ll need to wait until May’s exhibition to find out the answer!

Parents and carers join Cool Connections session

Mrs Cassidy hosted a targeted health & wellbeing family learning workshop on Friday 21st March. Parents and carers were given an overview of our ‘Cool Connections’ programme and had the opportunity to join in with some of the activities. Cathedral learners shared their experiences of being part of the programme and spoke about how the weekly sessions have supported and developed their social and emotional wellbeing.

There was lots of positive feedback from parents and carers including:

“My daughter enjoys going to Cool Connections on a Friday and feels she is being listened to.”

“I think it is a great support network and I have noticed a massive difference in my son’s learning.”

“I’ve noticed a difference in how my daughter handles herself when she is stressed.”

Cathedral teams up with Firpark and Clydeview to support local foodbank

As they do every year, the young learners of Cathedral, Firpark and Clydeview campus teamed up on Friday 21st March to support a local Motherwell foodbank. Under the watchful eye of Miss Cawley and Mr Cotter, pupils co-ordinated the gathering of items donated by the three schools and Andrew Ewart from the Maranatha Foodbank was, once again, astounded by the generosity of Cathedral, Firpark and Clydeview families. Many thanks to all those who gave so generously.

Primary 6 participate in first round of K’nex challenge

All of Cathedral’s Primary 6 learners took part in the first round of the OLHS cluster K’nex challenge on Thursday 20th March. The children worked in pairs to design a new Forth Road Bridge which would allow cars to cross and ships to pass under. Our learners had no guide or instructions to follow so had to collaborate, problem solve and tap into their creativity and engineering skills. There were numerous impressive bridges on the day and the winning duo, which will be announced next week, will participate in the cluster final in St Bernadette’s Primary School on Tuesday 25th March.

Please continue to pray for Pope Francis, as he remains in hospital:

Forest adventures continue for nursery learners

A group of nursery learners were out and about in our woodland area again on Thursday 20th March. The children had great fun in the sunshine managing their own risk by climbing trees and scaling the rope ladder. Some of our young learners chose to take part in a bug hunt using magnifying glasses and others enjoyed chilling out on the hammock.

This cohort of adventurers are looking forward to their Forest School graduation next week and are hoping a family member will be able to join them at base camp to celebrate all their achievements.
