Hello Boys and Girls

Hello boys and girls,

We have loved seeing all of you Wonky Donkey photos and videos from last week, it was great to see your faces.

We also enjoyed seeing all of your silly sandwiches, they were very silly but also looked delicious.

Have a look around this week, we have added new content for you:

  • Mrs Johnston has set you a challenge for this week.
  • We have added a link to a story from author Tom Fletcher with lots of additional resources to use with our Three Reads Approach.  We can’t wait to see what you get up to.
  • We have also added information for adults to support children transitioning to primary school and additional resources.
  • Mrs Irons has left a video for you on making ice cube paints in the messy play section!
  • We have added a link to “Play in a Crisis” in the outdoor play section, this is a  newly released publication from the International Play Association providing support in ensuring your child’s right to play during the current Coronavirus lockdown.
  • Finally, we have added some additional resources below around the upcoming VE Day 75th Celebrations.

Remember to keep in touch and keep sharing your work on Twitter or within the Nursery Zone.    Stay Safe.

 Hello boys and girls,

This week your challenge is to create puppets from recycled materials.

Mrs Johnstone, Alex and Penny demonstrate on the presentation below and we cannot wait to see your creations.

Mrs Johnston used an old milk carton.
What could you use?

There are lots of ideas on Pinterest.

Extend this learning

  • You can extend this learning by discussing the different materials used and exploring the texture of them.
  • You could allow your child to role play by putting on a puppet show, we would love to see this.
  • You could use the additional resources below to create more puppets – there are templates for stick puppets and finger puppets.
  • You could do more junk modelling and there are lots of ideas on this link.

There’s a monster in your book

There’s a Monster in your Book
By Tom Fletcher

Illustrated by: Greg Abbott

BEFORE THE STORY

You could look at the front cover of the book and ask your child – What is that on the front cover? Do you think the monster is friendly or naughty? What colours can you see on the cover?  Do you know any other books with monsters in it? What do you think will happen in this book?

DURING THE STORY

You should listen to the story once all the way through using our Three Read Approach.

On the second read  (not on the same day) you could pause the video and ask questions to help your child think more deeply about the story and share their ideas.  This could be things like:

  • “What will happen next?”
  • “Why did that happen?”
  • “Do you like this character?”
  • “Can you remember what the author does?”
  • “What is the name of the person who drew the pictures?”
  • What does the spine of a book do?
  • What is the blurb?
  • Do you like getting tickled? On the third read (a couple of days later) you could mute the audio and ask your child to read the story to you.

    AFTER THE STORY

To extend the interest and learning further there are some downloadable resources below that you could explore together. We would love to see what you get up to, so use the SHARE button from the main toolbar to send us a picture, video or comment.
