Breakfast clubs provide an excellent start to the school day. They aim to:
- Provide a healthy nutritious start to the day.
- Help children to be alert and ready to learn.
- Encourage children to mix with their friends.
- Improve attendance and performance throughout the day.
- Reassure parents that their child is safe when dropped off in the morning.
ALL pupils in P.1-P.5 are eligible for a free breakfast.
A breakfast consists of fruit juice, cereal and toast. Breakfast costs £1.00, but is free to those pupils who are in receipt of a free school meal. The price is reduced for multiple children in the family if all members of the family arrive at the till point at the same time. (2 children – £1.50, 3 children – £1.80).
Here at Kirkshaws, our Breakfast Club opens at 8.15am from Monday to Friday. There is no need to pre-book your place or commit to attending every day; just turn up on the days that suit your family circumstances. Mrs Stewart and our catering staff are in attendance daily to welcome our pupils with healthy food options and fun activities in a safe setting. Breakfast is served from 8.15am until 8.45am. If the weather is fine, P.4-7 pupils are allowed to play in the playground from 8.45am with school staff supervising. In bad weather, pupils are supervised in school until the bell rings at 9am, when they can then go to class.
North Lanarkshire’s Breakfast Club Leaflet provides more information on the format of breakfast.
Breakfast clubs have been recognised as providing a valuable service to schools and have been awarded North Lanarkshire Council’s corporate award for health and wellbeing and a Scottish Government award from the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (CoSLA).
Healthy eating
It is North Lanarkshire’s Policy to offer foods that meet national nutritional guidelines set by The Scottish Government. We aim to reduce the amount of sugar, fat and salt in the diet while increasing fruit, vegetables and fibre.
We will encourage Healthy Eating in our Schools to help your child to choose wisely, making sure they have a nutritious and well balanced start to the day.
