DEVELOPING OUR YOUNG WORKFORCE
As part of the government programme to Develop the Young Workforce, Kirkshaws staff are continuously looking for way to keep our lessons relevant and age-appropriate, whilst teaching skills for learning, life and work. Looking back at the past week shows us just a tiny snap-shot of that programme of work.
Over the past few days our pupils have had the opportunity to extend their learning in every area of the curriculum. From early numeracy skills to analysing and debating skills in partnership with Coatbridge High School, we have seen our learners set themselves challenges and show pride in their personal achievements in the classroom daily.
We have seen artistic talents encouraged through seasonal activities, in many cases using our outdoor environment. Food preparation, as always, caused great excitement in Rooms 15 & 16 as they created their own recipe – resulting in a huge success for Haggis Bruschetta!
But we also ensure we have opportunities built in throughout the year to look at the real world of work too. This week our learners have had the opportunity to work alongside Fire Fighters, set up their own shop and apply for jobs in our newly formed Tech Team and upcoming School Magazine.
So when you ask, “What did you do today?”…only to be told, “Nothing much!”… just keep in mind all the preparations for the future that are going on right now, even though it may feel like a fun day at school.
