The following provides a broad overview of the subject skills, knowledge and understanding developed in National 5 Maths:
- understand and use mathematical concepts and relationships
- select and apply numerical skills
- select and apply skills in algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics
- use mathematical models
- use mathematical reasoning skills to interpret information, to select strategy to solve a problem, and to communicate solutions
This is a suitable course for learners who have achieved the 4th level of learning across the mathematics experiences and outcomes in the broad general education, or who have attained the National 4 Mathematics course.
This course is particularly suitable for learners who wish to develop mathematical techniques for use in further study of mathematics or other curriculum areas, or in workplaces.
The SQA external exam consists of 2 papers – one calculator, one non-calculator.
Paper 1 – Non-calculator – 50 marks – 1 hour 15 minutes
Paper 2 – Calculator – 60 marks – 1 hour 50 minutes
