Primary 4/5

Primary 4/5’s Reflective Friday post for September

The children in P4/5 have been very busy since returning to school in August. We have had a focus of Health and Wellbeing, discussing all the different emotions we felt during Lockdown (the first) and how we felt about returning to school. It’s very different in school now – lots of changes have been made by all the school staff behind the scenes and the day-to-day running of the school looks very different, too. The boys and girls have done an amazing job adapting to this and know to follow the one-way system up and down the stairs and to sanitize their hands using the many hand gel stations around the building. In fact, keeping safe was our target for this month and you will see this in your child’s new Learning Journey jotter that we’ll fill in every Reflective Friday. (Please talk about your child’s learning with them and write them a little encouraging comment)

When reflecting on their learning, the children spoke about Literacy: making up Horrid Henry names using alliteration; making their own front covers for the book; drawing pictures to help demonstrate visualisation; spelling tests; spell-ercise; learning new phonemes; and writing poetry.

The children can show you their poetry if they go onto Glow –> OneDrive –> Shared and then click on the Word doc called their name.

They also mentioned RE: discussing who is in the church community; exploring the creation story; colouring their own crosses for display; and making chalices in Art. They very kindly made and delivered cards to Father Brown! When reflecting on their learning in Numeracy, they told me about Daily 10 – a mental maths warm-up activity they do before every maths lessons, playing maths bingo and practising their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We’ve also been doing a lot of maths outside, focusing on number and place value: ordering numbers from highest to lowest and sorting them in to evens and odds.

The children have been watching Newsround regularly and have expressed strong views around littering. They are very keen to start a litter campaign and raise awareness of how to care for our planet. We are so proud of our P4/5 eco warriors and look forward to exploring this together with them over the coming months.

We have also covered some of the NSPCC’s resource called PANTS. Here is the video we watched before having a good discussion about it. Mrs Wilson has asked for parents to familiarise themselves with this resource – you can search for it online. It’s a really important lesson to teach our children.

Thanks for your ongoing support,

Mrs Cooney and Mrs Daisley
