Primary 2/1 – September Update
Primary 2/1 have been busy all through out September. Our primary 2s have settled back into the routines of our classroom and have been fantastic role models to our new friends in primary 1.
We started our school year by working together to create a class charter. We made golden promises that we are working hard to keep these.
We have been focusing on the work of Scottish author Julia Donaldson as our topic. Each week we read a new story, looking for rhyme and making predictions about what we think will happen in the story. Lots of our learning that week is inspired by our story which has been great fun. Monkey Puzzle has helped us to learn about the life cycle of butterflies and think about our own families and how to stay safe. A Squash a Squeeze helped us to learn about size and we created a bank of different words to describe size. We also drew all of the people who live in our homes, just to check it wasn’t a squash and a squeeze. Most recently we read The Scarecrows’ Wedding which helped us to learn about scarecrows, Autumn, harvest and farms. We have enjoyed making scarecrows and creating art from the signs of Autumn we found in our playground. Our topic has also been linked to our play and we have had lots of fun painting the characters from the books.
Our literacy groups have been named after Julia Donaldson books. The Gruffalo group are learning initial sounds and have already covered s a t i and p. We are doing a great job blending these sounds to read and write our first words. We are also loving reading our reading books and learning our common words. The Room on the Broom and Stickman groups have been revising and consolidating some of the sounds they learned last year and we are now ready to move on and learn lots of new sounds.
We have been working really hard in our weekly writing lessons. Mrs Gilfedder is helping us to remember our core targets of capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and writing on the line. Our primary 2s are also trying hard to use our literacy wall and spelling strategies to spell our common words correctly in our writing.
In numeracy we are focusing on number. The circles group are working on numbers to 10 and the triangles have been working on numbers to 30, but we are ready to move on to numbers to 50. We are all recognising number, sequencing and ordering number, finding missing numbers and doing lots of counting and sorting.
We have been really lucky in primary 2/1 to have had lots of visits from Father Krzysztof who has popped in and told us lots about the Holy Family and Our Lady. We have been learning about the people in our church/school community and enjoying learning some Bible stories. We finished off the month with a beautiful blessing of the primary 1s in our church.
We always enjoy our PE and playroom time in primary 2/1 and we have also enjoyed a few chances to learn out doors in September, before the weather gets too cold.
Primary 2/1 and looking forward to a busy October. We will post some updates of our learning on X and share all of our news in next month’s blog.
