Primary 6 September Update!

Welcome to our September update for Primary 6!

Primary 6 have been very busy in all areas of the curriculum. We have just finished our class modelling novel Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo and it was great to look back on some predictions made at the start of the book to see what we first initially thought was going to happen, to discovering what the book was all about through various reading strategies and summarising the events together as a class. We have now moved onto working in our groups and receiving our new novels and working very hard throughout our reading comprehension strategies. Marvellous Matilda’s have received a book called Tribes by Catherine MacPhail and Fantastic Foxes have received the book The Queen’s Nose by Dick King-Smith.

Within numeracy and maths, we have been working on place value, rounding, estimating, and now we have been working with addition and subtracting. They have been focussing a lot on reading questions carefully so that they have a good understanding of what they need to do to solve the problem. We have also been applying a variety of strategies such as using a number line, recognising doubles and near doubles and looking at patterns within number, and using friendly numbers that can help them. We will continue to apply a variety of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division strategies to help us with us our computational skills. We have been continuing to use some mental agility games and activities throughout our lessons and at home in memorising and practising our times tables.

Our first topic, The Titanic, has been a great topic so far and we have all been enjoying finding out all about the people on the Titanic and what their jobs were, who travelled on the Titanic, and also the difference in social class. We are currently creating dioramas at home of what each of the rooms looked like and identifying important features to distinguish the difference between each room. Our class display is coming along greatly with class work and homework projects.

Within Health and Wellbeing, we have recently started learning about the first cog within Emotion Works, ‘Emotion Words’. This is an educational programme within Scotland and very well aligned to the Scottish Curriculum and related policies such as GIRFEC. We have been focusing on building emotion word vocabulary which helps develop and deepen emotional understanding and we look forward to learning more about each cog and becoming more emotionally literate.

We have also been busy in carrying out the Choccy Challenge with Scotland’s Enterprising Schools and Young Enterprise Scotland which they have created a fantastic resource designed to allow pupils to work collaboratively, be creative and solve problems, which we all have been busy doing within the class. We have been working in groups creating a product, giving it a name, creating a logo and slogan, as well as creating packaging and adverts for each of them.

Furthermore, Primary 6 have been preparing for our First Friday Mass that we are hosting on Friday, 6th of October.

Have a great week everyone!

Primary 3 Learning Update September

We have another busy and hard-working month where we learned lots of new concepts, celebrated our successes and hosted a very successful and well attended Meet the Teacher event.

For any parent who was unable to attend, here are a few of the issues discussed:

  • Homework – whilst this remains optional, I strongly advised parents to complete the tasks set and in particular, listen to their child reading their book each night as this will help ensure that their child can become a more successful learner.
  • Attendance – this is an area of priority for the council and school and as such, we ask parents to ensure that their child attends school each day unless extremely unwell.  Letters of concern will be sent out when attendance falls below expected levels. Remember that your child will miss crucial learning and may not cover aspects of learning taught and there may be insuffucient time to go over these at a later date.
  • Communication – please keep the school updated on any changes or difficulties at home including bereavement, separation, change of living situation so that we can best support your child in school and offer extra attention in these situations.
  • Positive Mindset  – please speak about school positively to your child in order that they make the most of their school experience and if there are any issues that you want to discuss, then please email me at nlcookh@northlan.org.uk or telephone the school to make an appointment.

Literacy

We are continuing to focus on personal recount in storywriting where have expllored the importance of covering lour core targets of using full stops, writing neatly on the line, using finger spaces and starting sentences with capital letters.  You can focus on these in the homework tasks set too which will support the work being done in class.

In reading, we are trying to read smoothly and with expression.  There is a marked improvement in the reading capabilities of children who have practised at home as they have increased confidence in reading at their level.

Numeracy

We have covered mental maths strategies and place value in September and have moved on to Handling Data.  You will see that the homework tasks set, give your child the opportunity to practise the skills of collecting, presenting and interpreting data.  We have covered Pictograms, Tally Marks and Bar Graphs and Charts.

Continue to practise skills such as counting on and back, saying the months of the year in order and reciting how many days are in each month rhyme.

(Thirty days has September, April, June and November. All the rest have 31 except February alone, which has 28 days clear and 29 in each Leap Year)

Primary 5 September Update

Primary 5 have had a fantastically busy and productive month of September. We have been growing and learning in all areas of the curriculum, striving to become successful learners, responsible citizens, effective contributors and confident individuals.

It was lovely to meet some of you at our ‘Meet the Teacher’ event and I look forward to getting a chance to speak with you regarding your child’s progress on our Parents Evening on Thursday 12th October. Please log on to the parent portal and book an appointment if you have not done so already.

Over the last month the pupils have made excellent progress in Math’s and Numeracy, they have been exploring Addition of larger numbers and learning a variety of strategies that they can apply to help them solve these problems. They have been focussing on reading questions carefully so that they have a good understanding of what they need to do to solve the problem. Children are encouraged to apply a variety of strategies such as adding in chunks using a number line, recognising  doubles and near doubles and looking at patterns within number that can help them. We will continue to apply a variety of addition, subtraction and multiplication and division strategies to help us with us our computational skills.

In Literacy we are making good progress with our spelling programme and the children can identify and use the most efficient strategies to spell increasingly difficult and tricky words. We have come to the end of our modelling block and pupils will now apply the skills they have been using to help them explore individual and group novels. I would encourage that when children do not have a book home to read that they are encouraged to read for pleasure. We have a class and school library with a wide variety of books that children are free to borrow any time.

RE

We have been learning about the life of Jesus and the children have worked together in groups to collaborate and research some of the miracles performed by Jesus. They were able to define what a miracle is and were able to ‘teach’ the rest of the class about the miracle that their group, researched using the bible. This was a good opportunity for the children to get used to using the bible and finding the relevant chapters and verses.

PE

We continue to attend Sir Matt Busby every Tuesday for our Swimming sessions. The children are making excellent progress and enjoying this very much. In the sports hall the children are learning a variety of new team games learning skills of co- ordination, pacing, positioning and indeed communication effectively in a team.

IDL

We have been learning lots about the Titanic and the people on board. We are looking forward to participating in some science-based learning using this topic, such as exploring buoyancy, density, water displacement and temperature.

Please continue to check school website for any updates.

Thank you

Mrs Preston and Primary 5.

Primary 1 September ’23 Update

We have had a very successful September, with the boys and girls becoming more independent during their school day and learning lots of new skills. We are learning more about the school and class routines and rules and are trying hard to follow these.

In literacy we have been continuing our active literacy programme and already know how to read and write s  a  t  p  I  and n. We have been listening to jolly phonics songs to help us to learn our sounds. You can access these on YouTube by searching for ‘jolly phonics songs in order’. Boys and girls, you can sing your songs for your families and teach them the actions! We have now learned 10 common words and we are continuing to practise these words every day in school and at home.

Our listening and concentration skills are improving every day. We are giving Oscar 5 when we come together as a class – eyes watching, mouth quiet, hands still, legs crossed/mountain/mermaid and ears listening. Keep up the great effort Primary 1!

We have introduced Star Writers to our classroom and we are working hard to meet our targets when we are over writing, under writing and writing on our own to get our work onto the classroom wall! We know that our letters have special places on the line and can tell if our letters are grass, ground or sky letters.

During our numeracy learning experiences we are continuing to learn how to read, write and count the numbers up to 5 and beyond. We are practicing our number formations every day and should do this at home too. We are learning more about numbers before/after and in between by using our number line. In the coming weeks we are going to learn even more about number stories and adding our numbers together to make a bigger number. To help us we will use lots of counting resources and have lots of fun!

Our class topic has been People Who Help Us and we have enjoyed talking about the people who help us in school, at home and in our community. We love learning about the emergency services and in particular the Police and Fire services. We even made our own Police vehicles. In class we have been talking about the importance of being safe when we are in the community, and how to be safe when crossing the road.

We are looking forward to another exciting month in Primary 1. We are so excited to be entering into October because we know this is an Autumn month and ends with Hallowe’en. Lots of fun to be had!

September in primary 4

We are working hard in primary 4 to establish good routines and habits to help us to become more independent. This includes tidying up the classroom, taking care of resources and knowing what is expected of us in our written tasks. Our teachers are seeing that we are all making progress. However, we are not in competition with each other so it’s ok that we go at our own rate. We all need different levels of support within class.

Numeracy and Mathematics

We are continuing to work on Place Value. The Circle group are identifying numbers up to ten thousand and are working on adding and subtracting 10/100/50/500. The Square group are working on hundreds and identifying numbers on a 100 square. We are also revising the 2, 5 and 10 Times Tables before moving on to others. Our teachers have found that regular practise throughout the year gets the best results.

In Number Talks we have been working on strategies for Addition. We talk about our strategies and this helps everyone to feel more confident. Some people use straight forward strategies, like making tens and others like to add the tens first then the units, for example.

In maths and numeracy, we have been engaged in a comprehensive exploration of 2D and 3D shapes. We have been gaining a solid understanding of shapes’ properties and their application to the real world. Furthermore, through various hands-on activities we have been learning about measurement, encompassing concepts such as length, height, capacity, and mass.

Literacy

In literacy, we have been learning about narrative writing. We have been developing their ability to describe characters and settings. We have done this by learning about adjectives and how to apply them properly to our writing. We have done an amazing job creating imaginative stories full of fantastic descriptions.

We are now well established in our spelling groups. Our spelling homework is very useful and beneficial, as it supports our work in class. We have been working on phonemes and common words. The Red group has begun new phoneme families with great success and understanding.

We have now finished our modelling novel so we are all working with our groups. The Red group have begun a short novel, the Blue group are working on a short chapter book and the Yellow group are continuing to explore the reading scheme. Remembering to bring our books in every day makes our tasks easier to do. We are working hard to answer in clear sentences to Prior Knowledge and Inference tasks. We are also doing Metalinguistic work where we find tricky words in our books and use various strategies to work out what they mean. One group enjoyed using a thesaurus!

Health and Wellbeing

We have been talking about the importance of good hygiene. We know that hand washing is important and have talked about why. We have also discussed dental health and know that drinking water throughout the day is the best choice to protect our teeth.

In P.E we have actively participated in various fitness games and activities, learning the importance of staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. These engaging activities not only promote physical fitness but also instil valuable life skills and habits. Our teachers are proud of our enthusiastic engagement and look forward to our continued growth in promoting health and fitness.

RE

We have finished learning about the Church and the importance of Sundays in our faith. We are working hard on our responses to the Gospel as well as being respectful during prayer time. We are about to start learning about the Rosary for the month of October.

Topic

Our Titanic wall is really coming on well! Some children worked with Mrs Walker to create an amazing Titanic! We all drew amazing pictures of the Titanic, which are now displayed on our washing line!

We have been learning about the different classes on Titanic and what their cabins looked like, their clothes, jobs and food. We have also learned about Captain Smith and how he came to be on the Titanic.

Next week, we hope to start to make shoe box cabins. We would appreciate any shoe boxes that you don’t need!

Primary 2 September Update

Primary 2 have had a very busy, but fun, September.

In Maths we have been working very hard on our numbers to 100. We have been thinking about place value, ordering and solving lots of missing number problems.  We have been playing lots of fun games and doing lots of work with partners and in groups to help us with this. We have also been learning about shape. We learned about lots of 3D shapes and enjoyed playing shape games. We also learned to make shape patterns.

In Literacy we have continued to work on more sounds and common words. We are getting very good at following Charlie Checker’s targets and have been trying hard to do our neatest writing this month. This includes forming all our letters properly, fingers spaces and writing on the lines. Each of our reading groups have been working very hard on partner and group reading and our reading skills are constantly improving. Within Writing, we have been using our topic as a stimulus for our narrative and recount work. Our favourite piece of writing has been our story about what we did when we got to be the teacher for a day.

In September we finished off our R.E. topic ‘Beginning of the Year’ and we began our topic ‘Jesus’ Family and Ours’. Within this topic, we thought about the birth of Jesus, and his life when he was young. We have been sharing stories about our own family life also. In addition to these topics, we have been learning about a variety of bible stories. We enjoyed learning about the lost sheep and the prodigal son. We understand that sometimes we, like the sheep, get a bit lost and we make silly choices, but God is happy when we return, and we try to be like Jesus.

In HWB we learned about keeping our bodies clean this month. We learned about how germs spread and we made amazing posters to encourage others to wash their hands.

We love learning about our new topic; People Who Help Us. This month we have learned about doctors and we made our own doctor’s bags. We also learned about the important work that police officers do. We made our own police cars. Finally, we learned about firefighters and how to keep ourselves safe in the event of a fire. We know how to call for help if we ever spot a fire.

Next month we are looking forward to carrying out our solo talks about someone we know who helps people in their job. Mrs Simpson can’t wait to hear all the fabulous information that we have found out. We will also be getting ready for Halloween and having lots of spooky learning.
