Friday 20th March

Good morning everyone,

I am thinking about all our families and hope you are all doing ok.  I am going to e-mail all of the P3-7 children on Glow today so that they have my e-mail and can reply to me at any time over the new few weeks with work related questions or simply to say hello and to keep in touch.  If any of the P3-7 children have lost their Glow details or need their password changed etc please  e-mail me at  gw10gallaghergillia2@glow.sch.uk

P1-2 children haven’t been given Glow details as this is not something they use regularly at school and children in these stages wouldn’t be expected to use Glow for e-mail and Powerpoint etc.  If however, you would like Glow details for your P1/2 child please e-mail me.

I know that the P6 and P7 classes have a Team set up which can be accessed through the Microsoft Teams tile on Glow.  This will be a way of staying in touch with their teacher and class.  If your child could check that they are able to access this and send a little test message this would be helpful.

Updates for the whole school will be posted here and on the school Twitter @HolyFamily_PS

As mentioned by Mrs Wilson, please remember that these are suggestions and not all tasks need to be completed. All children have SumDog accounts also and these are good Maths activities suitable for your child’s individual needs,  Sumdog has also opened up access free of charge to other curricular areas.

Please do stay in touch,

Miss Gallagher

PE idea for school closures

Hi everyone,

Joe Wicks also known as the body coach has nominated himself as the nations PE teacher. He has said on his you tube channel from Mon-Fri at 9am. This should help to keep all children active during this time. Even twice a week would be great and can be adapted for younger children also, so should be suitable for all p1-7 groups.

Have fun trying some of these everyone

Holy Family Primary and Nursery Class HT Update 19.3.20

As we have received official confirmation that schools are to close to children on Friday I would like to clarify the following points to avoid unncecessary confusion and alarm.

As you may be aware all staff will report to work in Holy Family Primary on Monday to receive clarification as to what our role will be during this crisis. We will continue to communicate with you through our school website and twitter account.

Work suggestions will be posted there for each class and updated regularly by Miss Gallagher and Mrs Anderson who are confined to working from home. Please contact Miss Gallagher on gw10gallaghergillia2@glow.sch.uk

The tasks will be a mixture of open ended and set activities which can be completed at home and will cover revision tasks and new learning.

I am very aware that not all families have multiple laptops and that older children of high school age will have priority in their usage of ICT in relation to exam preparation. As a result we will ensure that we provide a range of activities that are not all internet based.

I am very aware that many of our children are highly anxious as to the current corona virus situation and that you yourselves will be juggling complex family situations including childcare. My intention is not to add to that stress by imposing a long list of school work.

Please be aware that not every task set by the teacher has to be completed and that most importantly NO-ONE will ” get into trouble” if work is not completed.

Our curriculum includes PE, eg.football in the garden, art, eg. junk modelling/painting/drawing, drama, eg role play of book characters, science, eg. cooking, growing plants from seeds and so much more. Play is also integral to  learning so let the children play imaginative games as well as old favourites such as hide and seek, tig, skipping ropes, hopscotch or board games, snakes and ladders, four in a row etc. Please tweet us pictures of your adventures if you can and help us all to stay connected in the weeks ahead.

The one thing I would ask is that the children keep a short daily journal stating what they have done each day as this will help their feeling of achievement and provide a great starting point for when we return to school. I would also hope that this will make an incredible keepsake of this most extraordinary time in all our lives.

You all have my email and I will be available there to help in any way I can as I continue to work in the school but very much in partnership with yourselves in this most challenging of times.

Please read this message from Pope Francis below

God Bless

Mrs F Wilson

“Tonight before falling asleep think about when we will return to the street.

When we hug again, when all the shopping together will seem like a party.

Let’s think about when the coffees will return to the bar, the small talk, the photos close to each other.

We think about when it will be all a memory but normalcy will seem an unexpected and beautiful gift.

We will love everything that has so far seemed futile to us. Every second will be precious.

Swims at the sea, the sun until late, sunsets, toasts, laughter.

We will go back to laughing together.

Strength and courage.”

Primary 4 have enjoyed taking part in fair trade fortnight. We learned about where chocolate came from and we used fair trade dark chocolate to make Rice Krispie cakes for the fair trade coffee morning. In Primary 4 we have been learning how to write instructions. We were  then able to write our very own instructions on how to make Rice Krispie cakes.

INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING (IDL) WRITING/SCIENCE and FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT

P1/2 have been working very hard on their writing and they have enjoyed using Topics / Mini Topics (e.g. Fairyland, Fairtrade) and Science (e.g. The Water Cycle ) etc., as a stimulus for their writing.   The children particularly enjoyed watching a very simple u tube video on how to make Top Hat Cakes for P5’s Fairtrade Coffee Morning.  The children then recounted what ingredients they would need and each First, Next, Finally step to the teacher, which she wrote on the board.  The children then used this to help write their Suported recount of how to Make Top Hats.  In the afternoon when they made the cakes, the children were able to explain the First, Next, Finally  instructions as the used them, as they made ‘Fairtrade Top Hat Cakes…

…THE WATER CYCLE

As we used a Kettle to boil the water to heat the bowl that would heat up and help to melt the chocolate, we used our Mirror from the play corner. T

The boiling kettle represented the heat of the sun.  As the children noticed the steam coming out of the spout they were calling out ‘water vapour’ coming from the changing water in the kettle and as it began to steam up the mirror they called condensation. Then as it  ran down the mirror one of the children said it’s running back down the mirror like rain on the window and said ‘it’s precipitation.’  Then they all started to sing the water cycle song.   Fantastic learning!  So proud of you all P1/2.

RERC – THIS IS OUR FAITH /THINKING CIRCLES and EMOTION WORKS

As we approached Ash Wednesday and Lent the children with the rest of the the school through their R.E, Thinking Circles, and Emotiom Works, discussed what Lent and our Lenten Promise can mean to us as well as others, and how it can effect others in a very positive way, not just physically but emotionally.  That the very simplest if kindnesses that we do, can have an enormous impact on the lives of those around us.

SEAL and SUBTRACTION

The children have been working very hard on Subtraction using a variety of resources to help them in their learning. Using the SEAL approach to learning has helped the children to have fun with their learning as they engage with this very visual whole school initiative.

Primary 2 February

We have continued with new sounds and common words within Literacy, and Mrs Simpson is very proud of all of our achievements. Within Taught Writing we have been using a different fairytale each week to help us write. We have been learning how to write letters and have written exciting letters to our friendly dragon, Elsa and the king of Fairyland.

Within Maths we have worked very hard on addition, subtraction, measure and money. It’s been a very busy month indeed. We love when we do our Maths stations and enjoy learning through play.

As we are still doing Fairyland as our topic we have enjoyed reading and acting out stories. We have also successfully created a variety of artwork based on Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Our classroom is looking fantastic with all our creations! The highlight of our month was when we arrived in school to find that our beanstalk had been started by the characters of Fairyland.

Within ‘This is Our Faith’ we have spent time thinking about Lent and how we can properly prepare ourselves for Easter. We thought of Lenten promises and ways we can spread God’s love.

Fairtrade is a topic which we have explored this month. We enjoyed learning about what it actually means. We also learned about how chocolate is made, and enjoyed designing our own chocolate bars. We made bunting for our class and also did some home baking for our Fairtrade coffee morning. Our Tiffin looked and smelled delicious. We hope our visitors enjoyed it.
