P1 Working Hard in October. Mrs Stevenson and Mrs Byrne

  1. DAILY ROUTINE                                                                                                          ACTIVE PARTICIPATION AND INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING (IDL)

P1 have been working very hard and have settled into their school routine nicely.  Remembering and recognising their name labels, the children  hang up the coats and bags carefully beside them. They have also been learning how to use our Active Registration and Lunch register. The children are becoming really confident and quick to  recognise their own  names and placing them on the  colour of the lunch band, they are going to be using.  They are even recognising some of their friends  names too.   Then when all the children have registered their names on the colour chart, they help their class teacher count the total number of children on red,  green, yellow and blue colours, to give to Mrs Stirling, to help her make the correct amount of dinners.  Fantastic P1!  Well done.

LITERACY

TALKING/LISTENING , READING AND WRITING

The children are  working hard to  stay focused as they learn about their Initial sounds and how to use them, through active participation.   Using, North Lanarkshire’s Active Literacy Programme. E.g.  Magnetic Board and Letters/ etc.,  as well as Jolly Phonics/Big books/Songs / Interactive  and Animated film clips/White board and Pen/ Cut and Stick activities, etc.,  help the children  to  engage  and  develop their skills through active participation, as they learn about their initial sounds and  common words.  Their reading books also help to reinforce these sounds and common words. The children are also working very hard to  remember to use their good listening skills as well.  Such a lot of learning P1. You are becoming very ‘successful learners’ indeed!

NUMERACY

The Children are really enjoying learning about the Days of the Week/Months of the Year, through song and rhyme and also particularly with number, having worked very hard to learn about their numbers from 1-10.  They have been learning about what each number looks like.  How to form it correctly.  What it looks like as a number and a word.  How to make each number with a variety of resources. (cubes/buttons/pencils/rulers/pasta shapes (whatever resources are available.)  What number comes before and after.  As they learn through song/rhyme, active participation and interdisciplinary learning, the children have also been naturally learning about number through real life situations.   As they go about their day, your child  may say to you “Oh thats a 5″.  Or, ‘I can see 2 apples in the bowl’   Or I am using a pink/green/blue/red/orange and yellow pencils to colour my picture .  Thats 6 pencils”  Which is wonderful, as they are applying what they have been learning in the classroom, to real life situations.

R.E.

The Children have been learning about  their daily prayers. (Morning when they come in.  Before and After Lunch and just before we go home.)  They are learning about being kind and giving thanks for all we have and do.  Also in  October the children have been learning that this is a special month dedicated to Our Lady where we pray and learn about the Rosary.

TOPICS  INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING (IDL) – AUTUMN//HALLOWEEN/EXPRESSIVE ARTS

The children have really enjoyed learning about Autumn and watching out for the different signs of this every day.  They have been able to learn about Autumn through a variety of disciplines e.g.  Maths, (Months and Seasons of the Year,) Literacy, (Spelling /Writing Reading) Expressive Arts Drawing/Art Work/Crafts etc., /Health and Wellbeing (Autumn Walks/Beat the Street). The children have really enjoyed learning about Autumn through a variety of different subject areas and experiences. The  children particularly enjoyed getting ready for Halloween and making lots of different decorations using a variety of media to get their class ready  for their Halloween party.

SCIENCE – MINI-BEASTS             (PICS TO COME)

The children have  really enjoyed learning about Mini-Beasts at home and in school.  Before the children began their new learning, they shard   what they already know.  Then, what they would like to know.  So their Mini-Beast Science topic was Pupil lead.  Then  When they children  have completed their  investigation we  will record what they  have learned from their  investigations.  cant wait!

P1  also noticing signs of Autumn and Mini-beast activity as they have fun with P2 at  our Community Park .

HEALTH AND WELL BEING   (H&WB)                                                                   P.E AND EMOTION WORKS (EMOTIONS/FEELING)

P1 have really enjoyed  P.E. and  have also been very lucky with the weather, as they have been able to have  P.E.  outside in the fresh air most of the time. The children have been learning about rules for Health and Safety, following instructions e.g. Listening carefully and turn taking.  Also  they have been learning about working together as part of a team to achieve a successful outcome.   Fantastic work P1.  We can see you a really working hard to develop these very important skills.

EMOTION WORKS  –  (WHOLE SCHOOL INITIATIVE)

The children have been learning about their emotions through Emotion Works.   At the beginning of our Emotion Works lessons the children love to sing and act out their Emotion Works song. (Ask your child if they can sing a little bit for you. It’s called ‘These are Our Emotions’) They also enjoy learning  through a variety of fun filled activities e.g. animated film clips games song/drama etc..  They  have been learning about ways to identify what they are feeling  and why?  Also they have been learning about  different strategies and ways to deal with this.  They have also   have been learning that sharing  how they  are feeling, with an adult they can trust,  is very important,   As  they  might be able to help them  understand why they  might feel the way they  do and give them the support they need.

Lastly P1 enjoying their very first Halloween party with P2 and P3

Wow ! Can you believe everything you have achieved since starting School in August P1.   Well done.  Mrs Stevenson and I are so very proud of you.

Primary 5/6 Update

Primary 5/6 have been working extremely hard learning and successfully applying their reading strategies as well as practising their verbal reading skills. Primary 6 are reading Holes by Louis Sachar and Primary 5 are reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Primary 5/6 have also been learning and successfully applying their spelling strategies.

In Maths, we have been working very hard learning our addition and subtraction strategies. We have also been learning a ‘times table of the week’ in conjunction with our number strategies. We will be moving on to multiplication and division.

During topic time, Primary 5/6 have been creating a new invention in their groups to combat climate change, in the run up to COP26. We have also incorporated our oceans and continents topic in our expressive arts lessons by creating posters of animals from different continents in their natural habitats as well as learning songs from different continents.

We have been learning about the life of Jesus during RE recently. In particular, we have looked at Jesus the Healer and Jesus the Teacher.

Primary 5/6 have been successful learners and Miss Gallagher is very proud.

Primary 2 October 2021

We have had a very busy month in Primary 2. The children have been working so hard and have learned so much.

Within Maths we have been focusing on number. Our Cubes group have worked so hard within numbers to 20. We have looked at numbers before and after, larger and smaller and we have been ordering. Our Counters group have challenged themselves within numbers to 100 by learning about Place Value through working with tens and units. The children enjoy using concrete materials to help them with their learning. Here are some of our superstars learning through play.

Within Literacy, we have continued to work hard on our new sounds and common words. We enjoy building words using the sounds we learn and our great progress can be seen in our reading and writing. Here are some activities that we have enjoyed during our phonics lessons.

In Taught Writing we have been using a selection of spooky stories to help us to create exciting stories. We especially loved learning about the story ‘Room on the Broom’ and after writing, we made fabulous witches using a variety of materials including autumn leaves. Mrs Simpson loves to pick Star Writers each week. Here are a few of them showing their super work! This month we have been thinking about adjectives. We enjoyed creating adjectives for a range of different pictures and we used lots of these super descriptive words in our stories.

We enjoyed learning about the Month of the Holy Rosary in October, and we enjoyed paying visits to the gardens of the church where we participated in a decade of the holy rosary. We have begun to understand that the rosary prayer tells us about  the life of Jesus and his mother, Mary. It was a great time to learn about this, as we have been studying the topic Jesus’ Family and Yours within our R.E. lessons. Within this topic, we particularly enjoyed hearing about the story of the boy Jesus in the Temple. Pope Francis has called for us all to unite together and care for our planet. We have been learning about COP26 in Primary 2 and we discussed ways we could look after the environment. We made bunting to celebrate the conference. Here are some of our pupils showing off their promises.

Health and Wellbeing is extremely important to us and is a core part of our curriculum. This month we finished up our topic on People who Help Us. We carried out wonderful solo talks about someone we know who has a job helping people. Mrs Simpson was delighted with us. She said we had prepared so well and we demonstrated lots of confidence. We made sure we were a super audience when others had a chance to speak, and asked lots of super questions when they were finished. More recently, we have been learning about the importance of sleep. We read the story of ‘Sleeping Beauty’, thought about how we feel when we don’t get enough sleep and we designed cosy onesies for bedtime.

Our recent class topics have been Traditional Tales and Halloween. We especially enjoy purposeful play and the challenges we solve in carousel activities. We studied stories such as ‘Goldilocks’, ‘The Gingerbread Man’ and ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We loved making the pigs from the story, then creating houses made of Lego for the pigs to live in. Here are some of our favourite activities from Purposeful Play afternoons.

We understand the need for fresh air and exercise in Primary 2. We love to learn in an active way in the great outdoors. We have been great team players this month and worked so hard to earn lots of Beat the Street points for Holy Family Primary School. We also enjoyed the lovely Autumn weather and went on an Autumn walk to discover what we could hear, see, smell and touch.

Mrs Simpson is so proud of us for all our hard work. She said we should give ourselves a tap on the back as we have been successful learners this month. We can’t wait to start our new learning in November!

P4/5 May 2021

P4/5 have been working harder than ever this month! We have all been reading our novels, Poppet and Tilly and the Badgers, as well as the first Harry Potter book: The Philosopher’s Stone.

Not only have we been working hard reading, we’ve been doing so much maths including times tables, 2D and 3D shapes and objects, and, most recently, fractions.

As well as all this wondering learning, we’ve been busy in the playground and garden doing litter picking, weeding and planting. It has felt really good looking after our planet and keeping active.

Health Week has been great fun, with Sports Day, Outdoor Clean Up, and gardening.

Our certificate winners for this month:

Primary 7 – May 2021

Primary 7 have been working hard this month and the children have written their own blag post to share their learning with you.

Literacy by Sophia

This month we are enjoying reading the novel The Eleventh Orphan by Joan Lingard. We are enjoying this book so much and want a chance to read aloud. The book is about an orphan called Elfie who is taken in by Ma and Pa Bigsby. We think there might be a mystery in the story.

In writing we have been learning about the genre of explanation and we wrote an explanation of the Circulatory System.

Numeracy by Ushna

In the morning we have been doing a starter of calculating area. We have also been learning about not only decimals but fractions and percentages! It has been busy but we had fun learning lots of new things in numeracy.

RE by Shannon

In RE we said the Rosary of the 24th of May because the Pope said we should pray for all children and young people of this day. As it is the month of Mary we are making sure that we pray as much as possible. We are working hard as a whole school because we have promised to be a Laudato Si school so we are thinking of ways we can help to make the world a better place.

Learning Across the Curriculum by Ava

Over the month of May we have been learning about the human body. On this topic we have been taught how the circulatory system works. We have also been learning about tonal studies in art. We have drawn eyes and half of a celebrity’s face using tone and shade. This month has been so much fun.

Health Week by Alfie

This week is health week and we have been doing lots of activities. On Monday we had our sports day which included a sprint, egg and spoon race and a three legged race. Today we had the job of tidying the yard. We weeded the garden and planted some onions, peas and beans. We also tried lots of different fruits.
