Christmas Jumper Swap! Book Swap Reintroduction

The Eco Team met on Friday and came up with TWO fantastic ideas to help reduce waste:

Christmas Jumper Swap

Textile (Clothing) waste is a BIG problem. Items like children’s Christmas jumpers are rarely worn for more than one season because children grow out of clothes so quickly. Some statistics on textile (clothing) waste:

  • Each person in Britain throws away about 3.1kg of textiles every year, and that 1.7kg of fashion waste is landfilled yearly per person.
  • The United Kingdom is second in terms of annual spending on new clothing, with  an average of £980.50 per person.

So, here at Holy Family, we want to address this by hosting a Christmas Jumper Swap where you can donate Christmas jumpers that are too small and take away, for free, a Christmas jumper that will fit you!

FAQs

  1. You don’t need to donate to get a free jumper.
  2. If you have lots of jumpers that are too small, we’ll happily take all of them off your hands.
  3. Please give generously!
  4. Can you make sure they’re washed and dried before donating please? Thanks 🙂

Book Swap Reintroduction

There is a display area just inside the main door to the back playground which used to be used for a Book Swap. Covid restrictions meant we had to stop that but now we are delighted to announce we can reintroduce it! If you would like to take a book from this display, help yourself for free! If you would like to donate any books, bring them in and display them here for others to take. Please give generously!

Mrs Cooney will fill the Book Swap area with Christmas/winter-themed books to kick off the Book Swap in seasonal style!

God’s Loving Plan

A lot of our classes will be covering God’s Loving Plan as our final RE topic of the term. For more information and what this means your child will be learning about, please click on the link below. Any other questions, please feel free to contact the school.

This document is intended as a supplementary reference to provide parents with information about the learning and teaching detailed in ‘God’s Loving Plan’ for each stage across the primary school. In addition to a summary of the core learning for each stage you will find information about the vocabulary introduced and details of the corresponding learning. Information regarding the vision behind ‘God’s Loving Plan’ and suggestions on how you can support your child at home can be found in the guide for parents available at:

FREE ACCESS TO SOLIHULL ONLINE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY

FREE ACCESS TO SOLIHULL ONLINE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY

North Lanarkshire Council has made available free Solihull training for all families living within North Lanarkshire with an associated postcode. This learning opportunity is available to support general parenting guidance.

Solihull training is used for our own staff development and this is a fantastic opportunity to access this resource free of charge.

Please click on the links below to find out more about this and the course described below.

https://inourplace.heiapply.com/online-learning/

The access code will be LANERCH3.

The course described below has been adapted from this main Solihull training to specifically develop understanding of children with additional support needs.

Information for parents

This online course is for parents with a child with additional needs. It is for parents, relatives and friends of children who may have a physical or learning disability or who may have autistic traits. In the UK, you may be within the SEND (Special educational needs and disability) system. Some parents describe their child as differently abled, or neuroatypical.

This course is in 2 sections.

Level 1 lays the foundation for understanding your child.

Level 2 looks at some particular aspects of parenting: sleeping and anger management, together with more about how we interact with each other. Understanding this can make it easier to work with your child’s behaviour as well as supporting their development.

Once you finish Level 1 you can progress to Level 2 if you’d like to.

Book Week Scotland

As part of Book Week Scotland 2020 we are taking part in lots of reading activities to develop a love of reading. We are using the hashtag #readliveimaginesucceed  which was created through a whole school house competition. This winning hashtag was a combination of one word from each house’s best entry so that is 100 golden tokens for each house.

Mrs Hunter from Mossend Primary has also recorded a story telling session just as I have here as we cannot visit each other’s schools in the way we would usually do. Primary 7 have been recording stories for our younger classes and P4/5 have been doing this for the nursery also !

Remember on Friday it is Come To School In Your PJs With A Book Day ! We will be able to curl up with our books and listen to some audio books as well while our younger pupils will receive their gift bags of books from Read Write Count.

Please send photos of you reading at home to the school twitter account using the #readliveimaginesucceed  and lets have some fun with reading this week !!

Update on return to school in Holy Family Primary

Following the update from North  Lanarkshire Council regarding schools return for the new session I have revised our planned return model to incorporate Scottish government and local authority advice. As always this is subject to change should government advice alter. I am meeting with the parent council tomorrow night  and I wanted to share my planning with you all prior to that to allow for any subsequent questions.

I have tried to make as few changes as possible to the recovery planning outlined in June and have also included again the playground and building diagrams you saw then to refresh everyone’s memory.

I know many of you will be feeling nervous about this move to full time schooling and I want to reassure you that we are well prepared to meet the challenges that lie ahead. Our risk assessment for full return is also incuded in this post.

We are all looking forward to welcoming the children back next week and working with you and the local community again albeit at a social distance. Until then please contact me at my email address if you have any issues you would like to discuss.

Mrs Wilson Update Week Beginning 22.6.20

Welcome to my final weekly update of session  2019/2020. I want to take this opportunity to thank all our families for the support they have given the school by working in partnership with us over these last few difficult months. Your feed back in our questionnaire in particular has been vital in planning effectively for the children in a way that also meets your needs as working adults. I know how challenging remote learning is and the strain of juggling home schooling with the demands of your own workload can only add to that so thank you for your commitment and support.

Moving forward in the new session as you know your child will have a minimum of 2 days face to face class teaching but hopefully this will only be a temporary measure if the covid 19 threat continues to reduce.

We have managed to accommodate sibling groups and linked in with the nursery too to create a similar pattern of days. The groupings were also planned to take into account working groups and allow for high quality, ability focused teaching while meeting the class size restrictions based on the 2 metre rule. As a result the days your child has been allocated are not open to change. While I appreciate this may be challenging the capacity of the classrooms does not allow us to accommodate more than 50% so I would physically not have space to change the allocated days.

READING CHALLENGE

I have been contacted by NLC with details of the summer reading challenge in a new format.

This year, the national Summer Reading Challenge is online!  Silly Squad was launched last Friday, with a host of authors and celebrities helping to promote this to families all over the UK.

Alongside this, Culture NL Libraries are hosting a ‘Silly Staycation’ with our local celebrity, panto favourite Sheepie fronting our summer campaign; check it out here!

Follow the links to get the kids signed up for a Silly Staycation!

CASH PAYMENTS

From August, cash can no longer be accepted in schools and parents/carers will be asked to use cards via the online payment system to pay for things like school lunches etc.  Children will not be able to bring cash into school to top up their lunch cards.  North Lanarkshire Council will be in touch nearer the time to notify parents of this and will advise them to use the online payment system.
