Primary 7a November update!

Primary 7a have been working really hard in the past month!

They have been continuing to read their class novel ‘Divided City’ and are really enjoying looking at the different themes and ideas that this book explores.

In Maths we have been working hard on our times tables and learning to use them in different ways. They should be encouraged to practise these at home as much as they can. The class have really challenged themselves to try more complex math problems involving their times tables and have learned how to use the lattice method to solve multiplying digits with more than one number.

In Health and wellbeing we have been exploring substance misuse and the class have worked really hard to learn about the negative impact that substances can have on their bodies. They were really shocked to hear some of the facts behind smoking and drinking alcohol. I am sure they be happy to share some of what they have learned with you at home.

We have been learning about the lives of some Saints this month as our focus has been the month of All Saints and we have enjoyed learning about how they have became Saints and how they lived their lives.

We are really looking forward to the month of December and all the fun activities we will have during this time!

Primary 7 February update

Primary 7 have had a great month of February, we started back our sessions with the senior pupils from CNHS on Thursday’s which the primary 7’s really enjoy. This is an important part of our transition time. We have also been working with Science ambassadors and cannot wait for our next visit to CNHS next month.

In literacy we have been continuing our class novels, Goodnight Mister Tom and The Boy in the Striped Pjs. These relate really well to our WW2 topic which we have been working on since the start of January. The children are really knowledgeable in this area and are really enjoying finding out about life during this time in Britain.

In literacy, we have been focusing on money and learning about many of the situations they will face when they are adults. This has been really interesting for the class and they have really focused on this well. Next month we will be starting to look at fractions, decimals and percentages which some of the children are feeling quite nervous about but we will work really hard on this.

We have continued our preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation. The children have been so invested in this and have put in much thought and researching into learning about their chosen Saints. They are so excited to be making this Sacrament next month. If we could continue to practice our knowledge of the responses in Mass this would really help as well as completing our home tasks.

We have lots to look forward to in the month of March. We have another teacher starting with us who will be here before and after the Easter break. We are looking forward to working with Miss Taylor.

P7 November update

November has been a very exciting month for primary 7. We have had a few visits from CNHS to our class to prepare us for our move there next year. We also enjoy weekly PE lessons with some of the students from CNHS, which are really fun.

Literacy

In literacy we have been continuing with our weekly spelling words and work hard to learn them. It is important that we practise these at home as well as in school for our weekly tests. We are all working on our group novels, Mosi’s War, Kensuke’s Kingdom and Dragon Ride. We have weekly reading to be completed at home and it is important that we do this reading so we can complete tasks in the class. We have also been learning how to correctly use the apostrophe. This has been a little tricky but we are getting there now.

Numeracy

This month we have been focusing on multiplication. We need to make a real effort to learn these off by heart. We started by learning to multiply by 10, 100 and 100. This was easy but became tricky when we looked at multiples of 10, 100 and 1000. We have also been working on long multiplication and so far seem to be doing very well with this. We just need to remember to add our zeros (smiley faces).

Health and Wellbeing

This month we have been looking at peer pressure and how to tackle situations if we ever feel pressured into situations we don’t feel comfortable with. We have spoken about friendship and what makes a good friend.

Science

We have continued to look at inheritance and DNA this month. We have a good idea about what DNA is and made the basic structures. We also have learned about inherited and non inherited traits. We are able to describe where some of our traits have came from.

Expressive arts

Following on from the visit from the firefighters at the start of November learning all about being safe on bonfire night, we create our own firework images using oil pastels and scratch art. These were very effective. We also used pointillism to create some autumn tree images.

We have had such an exciting November and cannot wait for our Christmas activities in the month of December.

Thank you for reading.

Mrs Anderson and Primary 7

Primary 7 October 2021

Primary 7 have been working really hard in the month of October. They have really enjoyed being buddies this year and have been able to accompany their buddies this month on the beat the street walks. They also have had some joint playtimes with them.

In literacy we have just finished our modelling block of ‘divided city’ all of the children seemed to really enjoy this and have learned a lot about sectarianism. We have now all started novels, there are 3 in the class, ‘Mosi’s War’, ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ and ‘no trouble at all’ Each group will be working on these in class and may have some reading to do at home also in the coming weeks.

In Maths we have been working on addition and subtraction. The class are very good at this and are developing their written and mental strategies. Next we will be moving on to multiplication. If they could practise times tables at home this would be great.

In health and wellbeing we have been looking at peer pressure and they effects this can have on us. We have also been looking at ways to avoid and tackle these types of situations. In October we also started to learn about DNA in science. This is very interesting and will have us all thinking about our inherited traits.

For our topic we have been looking at the continents of the world. This has been really fun and has prepared us for the COP26 conference which we are focusing on now. We will be looking at a lot of climate change problems and thinking about what we can do to help with this problem. We have a good project for homework which is due on the 16th of November.

Thanks  for reading

P7 Reflective Friday- January

This month Primary 7 have been very busy working on their topic, WWII.  We found out that it was the 75th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz Concentration Camp on Monday the 27th of January 2020.

The class were introduced to their new science topic, The Solar System.  We are really excited to have been chosen to host a very special delivery of  moon rocks.  We have applied to NASA to study them in school and we await an inspection visit from a representative from NASA who will decide if we get to hold them for 2 weeks!   This month we have also learned about the order of the solar system and even made a mnemonic so that we remember what planets come first.

Some of our Primary 7 pupils were at a football competition last week and won first place, well done!  Other children were also involved in an inter-schools Netball Tournament which went very well.

In maths we have been looking at division and sharing equally as well as revising 2D and 3D shape, we have been asked to continue this work at home too .

In literacy,  we have also just finished our reading book called Divided City . The theme of this book is sectarianism and follows the story of  two boys who support different football teams but get on very well.  We are looking forward to a joint trip with P7 from Mossend Primary in the near future to build friendships and community with others.

In art,  we have been looking  at the works of the artist Claude Monet and they have ended up looking fabulous.  Hopefully we will be sending out details in the near future about an exciting Art Gallery Project…..watch this space.

And finally, our fantastic Parish Priest Father Brown had an accident recently and has unfortunately broken his leg.  As we missed his company so much, we decided to pay him a visit at home and have a doughnut with him to cheer him up!  Get well soon Father.

Primary 7 October

Primary 7 have been extremely busy this month and have had a range of great experiences which I am sure they have told you all about!  However, here is a short update on what has been happening this month.

We are joining Mossend Primary School each Thursday for our Daily Mile to  build positive friendships with children from other schools in our community.

We have completed our Social Studies Topic on the Scottish Parliament in anticipation of our visit to the Parliament buildings later this month.

In Maths we have worked hard on place value, weight and have started division with a focus on fractions and decimal fractions.

In Language we are continuing with our spelling programme and looking at the various strategies we have to help us spell unfamiliar words.  We have focussed on improving our comprehension skills using our class novels too.  There has been a fantastic improvement  in the quality of handwriting from all pupils in addition to improvement in the presentation of tasks, well done!

In Storywriting, we have been focussing on writing a persuasive text on the pros and cons of genetic testing. The stimulus for this is the work we have been doing in science on genetics. This will make the basis for a review of assessment and moderation of attainment across the Cardinal Newman  cluster.

We have begun our work with the charity, Nil By Mouth, an anti-sectarian charity who work with schools informing children of the detrimental impact that sectarianism has on our children and young people in our communities.  Hopefully there will be a range of events that we will work with Mossend Primary on in the coming months.  So far, all P6 and P7 children have attended interactive workshops on this project.

In P.E. we are very lucky to be working with Young Sports Leaders from S6 from Cardinal Newman each Monday.  They are delivering a series of lessons on fitness with the class which will hopefully lead  to a sports festival held in the high school in March/April of next year.  Many of the pupil in class also successfully qualified for the Sportshall Athletic competition held in the Time Capsule on the 4th November.

The pupils in P7 have been involved in lots of active learning throughout the month of October from designing and carving pumpkins to attendance at the Sky Academy in Livingston.  The pupils had the most amazing experience working in groups with Sky Staff in creating, directing and editing their own trailers for their movie ideas.  Each child was given their own copy of the work produced to keep on a pen drive as a memento of their visit.
